In 1892, the grisly murders of Whitechapel prostitutes four years earlier by a killer dubbed Jack the Ripper remain a terrifying enigma. And in a packed Old Bailey courtroom, Superintendent Thomas Pitt’s testimony causes distinguished soldier John Adinett to be sentenced to hang for the inexplicable murder of a friend. Instead of being praised for his key testimony, Pitt is removed from his station command and transferred to Whitechapel, one of the East End’s most dangerous slums. There, he must work undercover investigating alleged anarchist plots. Among his few allies are his clever wife, Charlotte, and intrepid Gracie, the maid who can travel unremarked in Whitechapel. But none of them anticipate the horrors to be revealed.

Narrator's overall narration was sleep inducing, causing me to have to rewind many times. The character voices were not too bad.

Narration was sleep inducing.

This is a very good good narrator, but the voice used for Narroway is unnecessarily nasty

The Thomas and Charlotte Pitt novels always deliver.

This reader had the most trouble with the voices of the male characters. They mostly sounded alike, so during conversatiins it wasn’t always easy to know which character was talking and I had to discern by context. The voice of Aunt Vespasia was terrible. She sounded old and crotchety, not with the strong dignified voice of an older former beauty, still admired and respected. Charlotte didn’t sound like the strong independent character we know. I will hope for Davina Porter for more listening of all books as well as Anne Perry’s.

The reader affects the story

All of Perry's series are well plotted and provide an excellent sense of the period. Narration was solid and well defined.

Anne Perry does it again

This series has had three different narrators over the course of the 20 some books I have listened to, beginning with the incomparable Davina Porter. The second narrator was not as good but competent as well as improving over the course of the books. This third narrator has chosen voices for one of the most loved characters, an elderly woman, and made her sound unbearably unpleasant in the extreme. She has also given a tone to the little maid that is not at all appropriate for her voice and it’s hard on the ear. This was a very good story except for that.

I had forgotten how the choice of the narrator added to, or detracted from my enjoyment of the performance
