Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2017

The Weight of Lies is a compulsively listenable whodunit you'll want to be sure to queue up for your next road trip. You know when you want to listen to something clever and entertaining, but not too taxing or highbrow? That's how I felt this month, and The Weight of Lies fit the bill perfectly. Right from the beginning I loved our lead character's slightly snarky voice and quick-witted manner (narrator Emily Carpenter sure can capture privileged rich girl with an underlying southern twang). Add in a contemptuous and complicated mother/daughter dynamic, a "book in a book" plot twist, and a remote barrier island setting, and this psychological thriller became all the more satisfying as my first guilty pleasure of the summer of 2017. —Tricia, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

In this gripping, atmospheric family drama, a young woman investigates the forty-year-old murder that inspired her mother's bestselling novel, and uncovers devastating truths - and dangerous lies.

Reformed party girl Meg Ashley leads a life of privilege, thanks to a bestselling horror novel her mother wrote decades ago. But Meg knows that the glow of their very public life hides a darker reality of lies, manipulation, and the heartbreak of her own solitary childhood. Desperate to break free of her mother, Meg accepts a proposal to write a scandalous, tell-all memoir.

Digging into the past - and her mother's cult classic - draws Meg to Bonny Island, Georgia, and an unusual woman said to be the inspiration for the book. At first island life seems idyllic, but as Meg starts to ask tough questions, disturbing revelations come to light...including some about her mother.

Soon Meg's search leads her to question the facts of a decades-old murder. She's warned to leave it alone, but as the lies pile up, Meg knows she's getting close to finding a murderer. When her own life is threatened, Meg realizes the darkness found in her mother's book is nothing compared to the chilling truth that lurks off the page.

Best book in ages! I normally don't even write reviews!

This book was so addictive! The story was fantastic, something I never thought of, and the characters were so detailed...I am impressed!

Great Thriller

I was caught ungard by a spolied rich brat who is brave and the story surprising. What is family? The people who love you not necessarily your blood relatives.

Great story w/ twist

Although I absolutely love the story, I felt it was drawn out a little bit too long.

weight of Lies

and awesome book to read or listen to I enjoyed it all the way through. the reader is very excellent in getting you to distinguish between the characters by her tone of voice.

Worth the Weight

An awful pun...I know. However, this was a good listen. The performance was wonderful and the story kept me interested. My only issue with the story is that some things were a bit far-fetched, but everything tied together in the end. Overall, this was a solid story made better by the performance. She has a great Minnesota accent!

Good, Not Great

This was a good mystery. Following the twists and turns and action was somewhat interesting - but - it never really caught me. Never really drew me into the story. Not compelling. A good enough listen, but I could have used my credit better.

another great story

I've almost read all of this authors books and its been such an awesome amazing time doing so!! she is a great writer one of my favs for sure the only thing I have to mention just one thing that is kinda a turn off is the way in every book thus far she uses the lord's name in vain a lot and I might be old fashion in some people's opinions when it comes to stuff like that or whatever but nothing bout God in my eyes is ever going to be old fashion I can never just disregard my belief to please anyone including one of my favorite authors but it seems to me by the way she writes that she would fully understand where I'm coming from and she surely wouldn't mind me expressing myself especially because I truly loved reading all her novels this far and can't wait for her to write more!! keep em coming Emily you do such an outstanding job!!

Not expecting that

I enjoyed the book. Some areas dragged a bit but there were parts that had me on the edge of my seat.
