Publisher's Summary

Up on the chalk downs they call The Wold, witches are banned: ever since the Baron's son vanished in the woods. Anyway, as all witches know, chalk's no good for magic.

Nine-year-old Tiffany Aching thinks her Granny Aching, a wise shepherd, might have been a witch, but now Granny Aching is dead, and it's up to Tiffany to work it all out when strange things begin happening: a fairy-tale monster in the stream, a headless horseman, and, strangest of all, the tiny blue men in kilts, the Wee Free Men, who have come looking for the new "hag". These are the Nac Mac Feegles, the pictsies, who like nothing better than thievin', fightin', and drinkin'.

Then Tiffany's young brother goes missing and Tiffany and the Wee Free Men must join forces to save him from the Queen of the Fairies.

Critic Reviews

"There is plenty to laugh at here...not least Pratchett's ability to put a 90 degree spin on the familiar." (The Times)

Our car journey was a giggle with this book

a toe into discworld for the 8 year old children on a four hour car journey. A lot of stopping to explain why the adults were laughing.

Ended far too quickly

A wonderfully fantastical story enhanced by the skills of the narrator. I didn't like the Wentworth character overly but it was, all in all, thoroughly enjoyable.

PLEASE GET STEVEN BRIGGS TO DO AN UNABRIDGED ONE!

It's a pretty good taster but there are so many good bits in the book this one missed out, please do an unabridged one, I for one would buy it like a shot!

Narrator isn't ideal

Tony Robinson's chosen voice for the feegles is very hard on the ears. He is an excellent reader but in this case its just impossible to stick with the story. It's breathy falsetto and just irritating after a while. I returned this one in favor of Stephen Briggs version.
