Publisher's Summary

When Ava McKenna left the neighborhood she grew up in, she never planned to look back. And for ten years she didn't. Not until Mateo Ortega, the handsome and charming boy next door, showed up to ask for her help. Mateo needed a favor, actually he needed a pretend fiancee and he thought Ava would be the perfect woman for the charade. Ava knew that she owed the Ortega family a favor but when she looked into Mateo's gorgeous brown eyes she realized that repaying an old debt might jeopardize her heart.

knowledge of Spanish LACKING

When a main character is Hispanic, the narrator MUST know basic pronunciation. I listened for ~35 minutes, starting out thinking, "this is a froofy Silhouette-romance type of novel, but junk food is fun sometimes," and then "this narrator has no clue how to do a man-voice without sounding like a pompous ass" and finally, "wtf?!? She can't pronounce quinceañera???" Basic basic word. The plot was stupid and completely predictable even though it was asinine. I guess I'm ok with junk food like potato chips and ice cream, but if this book were food it'd be pork rinds dipped in chocolate sauce and mayonnaise, with rainbow sprinkles. YUCK.

Narration is the key

I did not finish because the narrator was stiff & not believable! This was one of the worst audibles I’ve heard! The book was okay but not much for grabbing attention. Great audible for someone wanting to fall asleep at night!

Story so slow, narration monotone

I disliked the story line, I thought it was dull and there wasn’t anything to grab me. The narration was horrible, monotone and fall asleep to it. I couldn’t finish. Truly disliked.

Sweet story

The writing is good. The story very sweet. The characters equally sweet. Nothing terribly deep or new, but it’s a fair way to pass time, if you like this kind of story, which I sometimes do. With a narrator who doesn’t make the characters sound like caricatures suffering from head trauma. I gave it a low rating because of the utter spinelessness of the heroine. Seriously, why cannot a woman be sweet and kind yet still be able to speak up for herself. This ‘heroine’ is yet another who lets everyone around her dictate her life to her while she waits for the man to cue her in to how she should behave, using the excuse of kindness or compassion. Sorry, sweetness doesn’t excuse manipulation. So if you don’t mind a sweet, useless heroine, you might like this book. I prefer one with a backbone, one who is a little less manipulated by both hero and author. Excuse me now; I’ve got to go brush the sugar out of my brain...

An ok story

I wish there was more to this story. Depth into their past together and where they end up. I also wasn't a fan of the narration but I'm not exactly sure why.

Beautiful story but narration was ok!!

Not a fan of the narrator but it was ok. It would have been better if someone could read Spanish, since this was based on a hispanic family. It's fine with Ava's part but weird for the Ortega's. They still go to Mexico and all so I'm sure they can speak the language lol. The reading is a little emotionless when it came to the men's parts. But overall the story was cute, beautiful, and emotional.
