Publisher's summary

The Last War ended centuries ago, leaving behind a clouded, ochre sky and endless deserts where bloodthirsty mutants scavenge for flesh....

Johnnie Bernstein is a mercenary who just killed a prince. Now, he's on the run to the one place his enemies won't follow - the imperial capital of Vienna. It's the last place on Earth he ever wanted to visit, but with Balaskan cavalry trampling at his heels and a wasteland of monsters in every direction, he's out of options.

Drake Kicklighter is a gang lord whose daughter has been kidnapped by the worst mutant imaginable - the dreaded Demon Queen. He'll stop at nothing to get her back and knows Johnnie might be his one shot at saving her life.

Strapped for cash and in need of safe haven, Johnnie resentfully accepts Drake's job offer. But he's got a bad feeling about this one, and for good reason. A sinister black dog, a cyborg bounty hunter, and the legendary Demon Queen are just a few of things standing in the way of his next paycheck.

This is about to be one hell of a job.

New and unique apocalyptic world.

Let me first start off by saying that when I looked up this author, I realized this is his first book on audible. I normally like to listen to audible books by proven narrators, but I looked the cover art and it’s synopsis so I thought I’d give it a try. To be honest it took me a chapter or two to really get into it, but once I did I was hooked. The author reads this book and does a decent job. The voices are off a little in the beginning but get much better through out the audiobook. What I enjoyed about this title was the uniqueness of the main character Johnnie. Just when you thought you understand his character and his motivation, the author takes a left turn. I am looking forward to future books in this series. Definitely recommend a listen.

Working For A Living

This was my first experience with Claude McKenna's work and I enjoyed it a lot. The basic synopsis is about a man who is a mercenary who kills a prince and then he runs to a place where others fear to go. While there, he is hired to do another job where the cost may be higher than he thought. This was an enjoyable story where the action is never ending and the twists are surprising. I recommend this book to others who enjoy adventurous thrillers. Claude McKenna's narration is a little shaky in the first couple of chapters but eventually he catches his rhythm and becomes a great storyteller. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
