Publisher's summary

Sooner or later there arises in every human heart the desire for holiness, spirituality, God, call it what you will. One hears mystics speak of a divinity all around them that is within our grasp, that would make our lives meaningful and beautiful and rich, if we could only discover it. Instead, there is heartache everywhere, loneliness, fear, confusion, inner conflict, outer conflict.

In this spiritual masterpiece, Anthony de Mello opens you to the possibility that there is a way of getting rid of all of that. There is a way to transcend the sad condition wherein you are always wanting to change yourself, wherein your self-intolerance grows with every effort you make to improve yourself at the cost of struggle and pain. Anthony de Mello invites you to suppose a way of being in which you desist from all efforts to change yourself and from all self-dissatisfaction. Would you then think that you were doomed to go to sleep having passively accepted everything in you and around you?

The Way to Love reveals that there is another way besides laborious self-pushing on the one hand and stagnant acquiescence on the other. It is the way of self-understanding. These things in you that you struggle to fix just need to be understood. If you understood them, they would change, and you would discover that here and now is all is well. Though everything seems a mess, all is well. You would discover that you are already happy and fulfilled right now, and always have been, though you don’t yet know it.

Fresh view of the scriptures

This makes Christianity actually doable and sounds like the best of Buddhism. I will read it many times.

Highest order wisdom, horrible quality production.

Clear, direct, absolutely zero sugar coating of concepts for the sake of filling book pages. Of the most divine wisdom teachings I've ever heard.

That being said, this audio book production from the narrator to the engineer is among the worst I've ever heard or experienced. I wouldn't actually recommend this book in this form to anyone who wasn't a well read scholar of philosophy, theology, Eastern religion, or mysticism already, as the concepts are delivered extremely cut and dry, while being some of the deepest and most challenging to realize and integrate. Not only is listening to it an unpleasant experience from beginning to end, the poor quality has the potential to undermine the value of the wisdom if one is at all turned off by the experience.

A good introduction to the work of Anthony De Mello

I learned about Anthony from listening to a few talks by the spiritual teacher Adyashanti. and was so taken by his ferver towards Anthony that I couldn't help but read this book. I thought it was a great introduction to how he thinks about awareness and the idea that happiness can only be found by letting go of your attachments. This was very important to learn but I wish there was a little more on the actual practices of awareness that Anthony was speaking towards. It felt like he was generally talking about being more loving and caring and less about formal meditation but that in itself was enjoyable. this was a great read

Loved this Work!

Anthony de Mello conveys his wisdom to us in his very easy to understand language that engages and inspires. He explains parables in depth, gives examples, and leads the listener to the ultimate lesson to be learned. Excellent work and well delivered.

Profound

I’ve read/listened to many of these types of books over the years…and if you are ‘close’, this may get you ‘there’. ;)
