Publisher's summary

Wars change, warriors don't.

We are all warriors. Each of us struggles every day to define and defend our sense of purpose and integrity, to justify our existence on the planet, and to understand, if only within our own hearts, who we are and in what we believe.

Do we fight by a code? If so, what is it? What is the warrior ethos? From where did it come? What form does it take today? How do we (and how can we) use it and be true to it in our internal and external lives?

The Warrior Ethos is intended not only for men and women in uniform, but artists, entrepreneurs, and other warriors in other walks of life. The audiobook examines the evolution of the warrior code of honor and "mental toughness". It goes back to the ancient Spartans and Athenians, to Caesar's Romans, Alexander's Macedonians, and the Persians of Cyrus the Great (not excluding the Garden of Eden and the primitive hunting band).

Sources include Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Xenophon, Vegetius, Arrian, and Curtius - and on down to Gen. George Patton, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and Israeli Minister of Defense Moshe Dayan.

Not my thing, but still enjoyed it

Not my thing, but still enjoyed it. I actually bought this book by accident because I thought it was a part of Stephen Pressfield’s “war of art” series. While “the warrior ethos” definitely harks to a lot of the principles in pressfields artist inspiration books, it doesn’t directly deal with our struggles as artists. However, that does not mean that this book is valueless for artists or writers. I personally used this book to gain a deeper understanding of many of the “warrior“ characters that I’m writing about right now in my novels… But for anyone in the world who is fighting a battle within, reading “the warrior ethos“ will definitely give you a companion that will see you through the battle that is your life.

NEVER disappointed.

It went by quick. What warriors used to be. Pressfield has literally helped me remember what courage and strength are really all about.

Excellent and short.

A great synopsis of why being a man isn't always easy. Every little boy should read/listen to this and then make up his own mind of the direction he wants to go.

Amusingly Nonsensical

Vague, rambling, self-contradictory. Tried to argue that "warriors" are unique and stand apart from society at large, then argued that the Jungian archetype of the warrior is a developmental stage for every person. In addition to Jungian psychology, several other outmoded theories were put forward, such as the "savagery, barbarism, civilization" view of cultural development.

Overall, the incredibly short length of the book allows the misconceptions, half-formed ideas, and questionable allusions to ancient history mildly amusing rather than tedious or painful to read.

Happy to have found this gem

The Warrior ethos can be a look at the harshness some of our ancestors had to endure so that we could live the way we do now. There are many lessons passed down that can be useful to our society today including the perspectives of "I have conquered the need to conquer the world."
I'm happy to have found this book at this point in my life because I can use context from experience to apply this knowledge.

A GREAT BOOK !!!!!

WE FEW AMONG THE MANY. WE THE CALLED, THE CHOSEN.
THOSE WHO DECIDE TO RISE ABOVE THE ADVERSITY. TO BE THE PROVIDER , PROTECTOR, THE CONQUEROR AND THE ONE WHO CAN SEE POSSIBILITIES. THE ONE TO MAKE DECISIVE DECISIONS.
WE ARE THOSE WHO ARE CALLED TO LEADERSHIP.
A GREAT BOOK I LOVED IT . VERY INSPIRATIONAL AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING.
HELPS TO DEFINE THE HUMAN CONDITION AND PSYCHE FROM A WARRIOR'S PERSPECTIVE. ONE OFTEN SEEN AND OFTEN MISUNDERSTOOD. GREAT NARRATION EASY-TO-FOLLOW. HOPE MORE LIKE IT FOLLOW.

A RURAL MONTANA VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTER.

A good read for the studenrt of warrior psychology

I thought it was very well written and his ideas were well presented. the arguments he makes I believe are on par with Col. Grossman's "On Combat", clear and in depth but not over done, easy to follow for the lay person.
