Publisher's summary

My little boy’s room was empty, his bed neatly made. Alarm bells should have rung immediately. Then the knock on the door came. All I remember is a thick fog wrapping itself tightly around me. This couldn’t be happening to us.

Three years ago, nurse Zoe's son Ethan was found drowned in a muddy river by their home, along with his best friend, Josh. With no witnesses, their deaths were ruled a tragic accident.

Heartbroken, Zoe and her family move away from her home. They’re just beginning to get back to some kind of normality when, out of the blue, Zoe receives an anonymous email: "You need to find out the truth about what happened to your son. Don’t let this rest. Don’t believe the lie."

Shaken, Zoe starts an obsessive hunt for the truth. But why is her husband so reluctant to help? And why is Josh’s mother so determined not to believe her?

Engrossing, Twisty Mystery Will Enthrall Fans

Full disclosure: I have read all of Croft's previous books. Most are above-average thrillers, extremely easy reads with a fair amount of suspense. She is improving as a writer, and "The Warning" is my favorite novel of hers so far. Zoe is a mother of two teenage sons, one of which accidentally drowned three years ago. Now somebody is texting her strange and sinister messages about that accident. The police are unhelpful, so Zoe has little choice but to look into the matter herself. Yes, this is one of those books where an ordinary person is forced into becoming a detective, but Croft does it very convincingly. There are the usual amount of clues and potential red herrings, but I really liked the way the story all gradually came together. Note: I listened to the audiobook version, which was expertly read by Willow Nash and Jonathan Broadbent. Nash in particular did such a great job, I'll be on the lookout for other books she's narrated.

Random False Rape Accusation?

I dont normally tend to write reviews, but this book deserves one.
Late in the story, the main characters husband is accused of rape by a bitter female coworker. this gets brought up again at the very end of the book as a general mention, specially about how "it could have ruined poor Jake's life if she hadn't come clean!". I found this entire exchange insulting and above all unnecessary. This point had nothing to do with moving the story along or the plot in general.

For a book that has about as much meat on it as a tabloid magazine, that was the last straw. The story isn't bad, but it isn't good. Save yourself the 11 hours and pick something else.

Just okay

I initially really enjoyed the story - and the excellent narration - but lost interest as too many new characters and storylines were introduced. Rather than adding to the key plotline or contributing an element of intrigue or suspense, it just felt distracting and exhausting to keep up with. The story was worth finishing to the end, as I truly did want to know what happened to the key players, but I won't be reading/listening to this one again.

Consistent with all the other reviews...but...

Mystery..check. Classic English performers and settings..check. Plot twists and surprising resolutions...check.

All the boxes are checked...and yes, it is very solid. All that said, it seemed like take-out food..filling yet unfilling. Something was missing at its core. But, it is a very solid mystery, with outstanding characters, some of whom I will recall for a long time. However, it is often messy and frankly needs some serious editing.

On balance, however, strong rec, with caveats that you listening for the scenarios, not the story arc. Enjoy.

Great story. Captivating. Kept me intrigued.

Lots of turns and twists til keep you guessing. I wasnt crazy about the very ending with all the followup which could have been skipped and left to imagination but would definately reccomend this book.

The Warning

This is probably Croft's best work to date. I had most of it figured out, but it's still twisty enough to offer some surprises. Good narration.

Not Terrible but not great.

This book was so so. It did keep me interested though there were times when it dragged and the narrator sounded like she was reading. The story was okay. So I gave it 3 stars because over all it was just ok.

Kept me guessing until the end

A nightmare for any mother or father to face... losing a child is not supposed to happen. This story grabbed hold of me and kept me guessing through the end. It held my attention which is why I enjoyed it so much. An excellent job all around. Highly recommend. 😀😀😀
