Publisher's summary

From Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli comes the story of a girl searching for happiness inside the walls of a prison. And don't miss the author's highly anticipated new novel, Dead Wednesday!

Cammie O'Reilly lives at the Hancock County Prison - not as a prisoner, she's the warden's daughter. She spends the mornings hanging out with shoplifters and reformed arsonists in the women's excercise yard, which gives Cammie a certain cache with her school friends.

But even though Cammie's free to leave the prison, she's still stuck. And sad, and really mad. Her mother died saving her from harm when she was just a baby. You wouldn't think you could miss something you never had, but on the eve of her 13th birthday, the thing Cammie most wants is a mom. A prison might not be the best place to search for a mother, but Cammie is determined and she's willing to work with what she's got.

Critic reviews

"A tapestry of grief and redemption, woven by a master storyteller...Moving and memorable." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

"This is a story about facing hard truths and growing up. Readers will love the details of having a prison compound for a home and adore the many secondary characters who help keep Cammie's head above water during her desperate search for happiness." ( Booklist)
"Character development and realistic dialogue shine in this emotional historical fiction title. Spinelli's characters are achingly real." ( School Library Journal)

6th graders - JMS

The students love it, and some even identified themselves with details of the story. They created a Book Trailer, to invite others to read the story and did some excellent work.

WORST BOOK EVER!

I want to burn this book to the ground and dance on it's ashes. The o my reason I finished it was so that I could give it a proper review on my vlog. The two plot twists are ridiculous and annoying. The major problem is that the character who point of view this book is from is 1 dimensional....All she is is angry that's it! The author does a terrible job of building relationships between her and characters we are supposed to care about. So when the twists with these characters happen I just don't care, because I never felt attached to them to begin. with. Save yourself and gauge your eyes out before you read this book!
