Publisher's Summary

An inside look at sexual practices in medieval England.

Were medieval women slaves to their husband's desires, jealously secured in a chastity belt in his absence? Was sex a duty, or could it be a pleasure? Did a woman have a say about her own female sexuality, body, and who did or didn't get up close and personal with it? No. And yes. It's complicated.

Romance, courtship, and behind closed doors.

The intimate lives of medieval women were as complex as for modern woman. They loved and lost, hoped and schemed, were lifted up and cast down. They were hopeful and lovelorn. Some had it forced upon them, others made aphrodisiacs and dressed for success. Some were chaste and some were lusty. Having sex was complicated. Not having sex was even more so.

Inside The Very Secret Sex Lives of Medieval Women, a fascinating book about life during medieval times, you will discover tantalizing true stories about medieval women and a myriad of historical facts.

Very Well Done!

I don't usually review books but I just had to for this one! The content was interesting, hilarious, terrifying and so SO well researched! The author is so knowledgeable about this period, I have been a fan of her website (which I highly suggest you visit) for a long time, so I knew the book would be good and I was not disappointed! I would highly recommend this to any history lover! Unlike other books about life in mideval times that drone on and on and on, making them very easy to fall asleep to, this book was wonderful and kept my interest from beginning to end, the narrator was fantastic as well!!!!!

Good book but lack of consistent open mindedness

I loved the book up to the chapter over transgender individuals. Considering how respectful and thoughtful the chapter over intersex people was, you wouldn't expect an entire other chapter calling a trans man a woman repeatedly and not once giving his story the depth and complexity of the other stories she tells. It would have been better to not include a trans man in a book about women if the proper context wasn't going to be placed around him. Deeply disrespectful, sadly such a good book otherwise.

Interesting topic, terrible narrator.

The topic is fascinating, but the narrator sounds like she is out of breath - every sentence starts with a deep gasp of air. Extremely distracting and it detracted from my enjoyment significantly.

Lack of historical detail and depth

I found the stories of the women superficially covered with a lack of thought about them as people, a slightly flippant tone often at odds with what were at times quite dark stories

The worst narration I have ever endured

This is a very interesting, well put-together book. A detailed, easy to read load of history with snippets of humour.

Well it would be, if every witty or humourous remark hadn't had the humour sucked out of it by the terribly timed, almost robotic, narration.

It is read as if by a schoolgirl being made to read something written by a small group of kids, as a project, out loud in front of the school;
The pauses are too short.
Every word is del-ib-er-aTe-ly announced.
There's no way the narrator is listening to or understanding what she's saying.
She mispronounces words all over the place
I've never heard anyone read out loud who sounded so much like a computer generated voice.
The only thing she gets right is some intonation.

I am persevering with this book because it is really quite interesting, but it is despite the terrible narration, which detracts from the feel of the whole thing.

As a performer and user of the microphone myself, I'm reluctant to criticise others, unless they're spectacularly awful. Cat Gould falls into that category. If I finish this book it won't be without a million complaints about the abysmal narration, in my head, as I listen. And I'll never, ever attempt to listen to anything I see she's narrating.

Alternatively, I might just seek out a hard copy of the book because it really is quite good and then I wouldn't need to suffer the dreadful performance attached to the Audible version.

worst narrator

worst narrator I have ever experienced. too many attempts at humour to wade through to get to the decent historical content.
