In 1865, orphaned Daisy Francois takes a position as housemaid at a midwestern Wisconsin castle and finds that the reclusive and eccentric Gothic authoress inside hides more than the harrowing tales in her novels. With women disappearing from the area and a legend that seems to parallel these eerie circumstances, Daisy is thrust into a web that may threaten to steal her sanity, if not her life.

In the present day, Cleo Clemmons is hired by the grandson of American aristocratic family the Tremblays to help his matriarchal grandmother face her hoarding in the dilapidated Castle Moreau. But when Cleo uncovers more than just the woman's stashes of collectibles, a century-old mystery of disappearance, insanity, and the dust of the old castle's curse threaten to rise again, and this time, leave no one alive to tell the sordid tale.

Fan-favorite Jaime Jo Wright draws listeners into a seamlessly woven dual-time tale of suspense, mystery, romance, and redemption.

What a wonderful story that even in the darkest most twisted moments, there is hope and redemption and light ! And the narration was spot on. Sara Farrington is one of my favorite audiobook readers. She vibes perfectly with each story.

Light in the darkness

Overall I disappointed in the story. I was drawn into it and needed to know how it finished but it ended up being a little predictable. It isn’t that long of a book but I felt like it dragged on quite a bit in the middle. The main character Chloe was too emotional and in her own head most of the time and it got old. I also felt like her swooning over Deacon was a bit over the top.

Disappointed

Figured out what was going on, but it didn’t ruin it. I was just hoping I was right lol. I was so sad when the book was over!

Quite a ride!

It was a little hard to follow at first because the time bounces a bit. But once the story got going it was not an issue. The story was great, but the narrator was just ok. Overall, definitely worth the credit.

Great story, ok narration

I absolutely LOVED this book! Jaimie kept you guessing right up until the end. I love the way she weaves her stories of mystery and keeps you wondering the entire time!

The narrator did a SPECTACULAR job!! Her ability to give voice to each of the characters was amazing! With Jaimie's detailed descriptions and Sarah's fantastic ability to bring voice to the characters, it was so easy to envision each one!

I HIGHLY recommend this audio book!!!

Best Jaimie Jo Wright Book Yet!!

Took a long time to get to the meat of the story; felt melodramatic with too much gushing over male characters

Ok..

The plot is predictable... not a complete failure in the horror genre, because sometimes the mood is the thing. But the breathless, overly dramatic voice takes away everything. Listeners don't get a break from the SUSPENSE even when it's just a drive to the grocery store. The pacing of the story itself is uneven and the narrative contradicts itself. This might be a good book if it had an editor.

Rated high for the mood, not the writing, not the performance
