Publisher's summary

Fall, 1880

A man is missing, vanished in the uncharted wilds of the new northern territories. And not just any man, but a scholar - a scholar whose influence extends all the way to Washington.

Jack Percy is asked to do the unthinkable: enter the hostile wilderness near the Canadian border, without the aid of military support, locate and extract the missing man. His reluctance is strong and sensible - the man has surely already met his fate. But something tugs at him, something internal, something more than the federal reward.

Winter stands at the threshold, the very season of death. If the missing person is to be retrieved, it must be done now and with the greatest of haste. Jack leads a small search party into the forest with a singular objective. What they find, however, is a past that refuses to die, and perhaps the most efficient and lethal Indian tribe they've ever seen or heard of. Or worse.

An intriguing and well-paced story

What did you love best about The Unknown?

E.S. Taylor did a very good job with character development. You really care about the characters as the story develops. I also like how he tied details together from different times. It made for a very "smooth" and interesting read.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Unknown?

A good job is done of making several moments seem very real and stick with you well after the book is finished. The opening scene captured a very powerful moment that had a lasting effect on a character.

Which character – as performed by Steven Roy Grimsley – was your favorite?

Ray. While he was a man of few words, Grimsley brought him to life. His performance overall was very good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several were moving. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll just advise that you give this book a shot. I think it is well worth the time.

Original historical fiction western.

This was an interesting and original story. It was a little slow for a few chapters after the beginning, but t hose chapters give the listener an opportunity to learn more about the character's lives. Once the characters and the atmosphere are established the surprizes and action start. The narration was not terrible but it could be better. The narration just did not really engage the listener as well as it could have.

The Unknown

Would you consider the audio edition of The Unknown to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version. But will based on how good this audio version is!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Unknown?

The eerie imagery at the historic battle field. Don't want to give anything away

What about Steven Roy Grimsley’s performance did you like?

A great performance. Mr. Grimsley was spot on with the feelings he evokes at each step of the reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Fear, foreboding, excitement as each layer of the story evolved. Didn't want to leave the story, I felt that involved personally.

Any additional comments?

This was a high point in my audiobook listening time. Both the words of the author and the reading was full of imagery.

New take on a western

I found the whole book to be suspenseful, exciting. Steven Roy Grimsley was fantastic. The range of characters. Is wonderful and I'm going to read any chance I can find. The author is onto a great series if he wants it.

Not your ordinary mystery/thriller

This book was not what I expected and I was not satisfied with the ending; but I did like the book. The characters were believable and I especially liked Emma. The author started a little slow, but I was more engaged as the characters developed. By the end of the book I couldn’t stop listening. I would be interested in other books by this author. The Narrator was good in my opinion.
