This gripping new anthology has over a dozen original tales starring the top-selling mutant heroes, the uncanny X-Men, dealing with their greatest foes, as well as the day-to-day trials of being mutants - trying to protect the world they've sworn to protect, a world that hates them for what they are!

From eluki bes shahar's story of the X-Men's fight against a mutant who can alter reality to Dave Smeds' look at what would have happened if the X-Men never were, from Ashley McConnell's chronicle of Wolverine's trek across the frozen tundra to Dean Wesley Smith's tale of Gambit in his hometown of New Orleans, and much more - these are spectacular tales of mutant adventure!

Solid Marvel anthology

With all anthologies, stories are hit and miss so my standards for them are more lax than for cohesive works. That said, this is a very good representation of what the X-Men line, and Marvel in general, does best: superhero powers vs supervillain powers, heroes vs their own humanity, and heroes vs other people's humanity. It's also a good sampling of the best and most famous X-Men members.

Somehow my previous review got marked as anonymous, so I'll post it again:

Good

Nicest X-men so far. Highly recommend for my fellow nerds. What’s next I’m on it.

Good stories marred by poor narration

This prose anthology of original short stories about the X-Men was, for the most part, written surprisingly well. As usual with anthologies, the listener will find some stories more entertaining than others.

Unlike some similar anthologies, the characters in these stories actually act in a manner that is consistent with their actions in the original comic book source material. That should not be too surprising since Marvel and Stan Lee were involved in the preparation of the anthology.

That made the poor narration even more disappointing. Thom Rivera reads with little or no emotion or voice variation to distinguish moods or characters. Even more distracting, however, is his mispronunciation of words. For example, when saying “homo sapiens” and “homo superior”, he mispronounces them as “homeo sapiens” and “homeo superior.” He also mispronounces at least one well-known character’s name. There is no excuse for these kinds of errors, which distract and detract from the listener’s enjoyment.

There are a limited number of copies of this anthology available in print on Amazon and I recommend buying it in that format rather than as an audiobook for those who will find the narration flaws too distracting. However, if such narration problems do not bother you, then this book is likely going to be an enjoyable listen for you.
