Sales is a very competitive market. You have a lot of competition from different industries. Competitors would often look for a gap within your product so they could try and solve it themselves. The field of sales is also very different compared to the marketing field. In this episode of The Tweeps Podcast, Ryan Carruthers is with Aazar Shad. In their conversation, Aazar shares how to become a great salesperson and his observations in the field.

    What are Sales?

    [03:51]

Aazar wanted to become a marketing manager, but he had no choice but to choose sales even though he didn’t want to. He mentioned that sales are all about letting people make their decision. You help make that decision by giving them the benefits and advantages of buying that particular product.

Be Good at Marketing by Doing Sales

    [05:39]

A salesperson sees the actual feedback and reaction of the customers while marketing cannot. Marketing is selling something with the use of a billboard or TV.

    How to Be More Empathic

    [07:23]

The best way to observe and empathize with people is to become the customer ourselves. It’s easy to have empathy if you’re a customer yourself. For example, you are selling educational games, and you were able to talk to the parents. This made you understand the side of the parent. Now, you become a teacher to understand how the student (the kid) thinks. Upon becoming a teacher, you could develop empathy for the student.

    Unpacking People’s Needs

    [12:28]

When going to a doctor, the doctor first asks you what you are feeling and your symptoms, and this is to help them figure out what the problem is. Just like in sales, you first must ask your prospective customer about what their problem is so you can introduce a product that will help solve their problem. The best salesperson understands the need and guides the customers.

    [17:45]

Be an active listener and observer so you can guide your customer well. They will often ask questions that can help you answer what they need.

    Competitors

    [20:14]

What competitors usually do is that they look for a problem that a competitor hasn’t solved yet. In this way, they’ll be able to think about how to solve that problem.

    Keeping Notes on Sales Calls

    [25:32]

Aazar doesn’t necessarily take notes on sales calls. Outbound sales are harder than Inbound sales. Inbound sales already have their frustrations and problems introduced; you just have to figure out how to solve them.

    Facilitating a Sale

    [26:45]

If a customer already agrees with you, it is already the time to book a call. You either book the call immediately or give them a choice to book a call at a later date. During the first emails with your customers, you must try to think of the possible questions they have in mind and answer them in the email. However, you shouldn’t send everything at once. Send it gradually and keep the conversation going and interesting. Aside from that, you could also offer a trial version of your product. This will help them test, assess, and learn more about your product.

    After-Sale Experience

    [36:17]

A great salesperson must know copywriting and storytelling. In storytelling, you give the customers an idea of how to solve their problems, like how you used to experience the same thing and were just able to solve them. Aside from that, copywriting can be useful in emails and words, and you can help convince them by using trigger cues.

    Closing

    [43:04]

Aazar shared that he left sales to become a marketer. He realized that sales enable you to meet many people and can help you with personal development. He personally enjoys selling and looking at the sales data every day on how the numbers go up. However, the competition in sales is something he was uncomfortable with. Unlike in marketing, everyone is helping each other.
