In this classic, romantic ghost story, a governess on a remote country estate begins to believe her charges are possessed by the spirits of 2 dead former servants. Are her perceptions simply the fruit of her neuroses - or could they possibly be valid? A foray into the very heart of evil, Henry James's masterful novel is also remarkable for its psychological acuity and evocation of mood.Copyright (P)1996 by Dove Audio, Inc. Ms. Beacham does an incredible job realizing this classic tale of horror to an audience who may be thinking, "been there, done that". Thoroughly enjoyed this creepy carriage ride through the mysteries of evil.

sublime performance and finely attuned writing

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

For those who may be put off by this author, this is an easy place to start.

What other book might you compare The Turn of the Screw to and why?

Other ghosts stories of this period

What does Stephanie Beacham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Beacham has a marvellous voice and paces this horror story with actorly mastery and great intelligence. She understands that like a symphony, one has to build slowly to the crescendo.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Innocents

Any additional comments?

Henry James requires an actor of intelligence who does not over egg the prose and Beacham does this perfectly.

Entry level Henry James

I once read some of this book aloud to friends on a long car trip. Many of the sentences are a joy ride on their own--you don't know where the sentence will take you, and what the journey will be like. Such was this reading of the book--only far better to hear this exquisite narrator revel in the delight of the sentence structure. The story is great in its own right--a mystery novel that fully holds its own--but the plot pales compared to the joy expressed by the narrator in the reading of it.

Well read intriguing novel

Turn of the Screw is a wonderful book -- a kind of complicated ghost story that showcases the complexities of the interactions between adults and children. This particular reading is wonderful, and the sound quality is excellent.

Great book; wonderful reading

This was very well read. I have seen the many movies made made from this story. It was great to hear the original story. The best movie made of this has to be "The Innocents" 1963 The book is very true to it's time period. 1898 So get ready for some real old British language.
