A Wild, Darkly Funny Ride with Sharp Twists

I really enjoyed how this book blends dark humour, crime, and suspense into something that feels fast-paced and unpredictable. Russell Finch is a flawed, entertaining lead, and the idea of a washed-up, controversial writer being pulled into something far bigger and darker than himself works brilliantly. The story doesn’t waste time getting interesting, and once it hits its stride, it keeps throwing curveballs.
The setting of McBride adds a strong sense of atmosphere. The town’s past, the shadowy criminal influence, and the lingering sense that something is deeply wrong all build tension nicely. I liked how the novel balances moments of humour with genuinely unsettling elements, giving it a crime-thriller feel without becoming overly heavy or grim.

What stood out most was the conversational narrative voice, which feels like Finch talking directly to you, adding dry humor while still keeping the tension high. Short chapters and frequent twists keep the pacing tight and make it easy to stay hooked. While the style may take a moment to adjust to, it fits the story well and adds personality. Overall, it is an entertaining listen with strong momentum and a surprising finish.

Flirty, fast, and fun

This was such an entertaining listen. The chemistry was immediate, the banter was sharp, and the pacing kept things moving without dragging. I liked how the characters felt confident and flawed at the same time, which made their dynamic more engaging. The narration added personality and warmth, especially during the lighter, flirtier moments. It was easy to get swept up in the tension and humor. I finished it smiling and ready for whatever comes next in the series.

Fun, Messy, and Way Too Relatable

I wanted something light and entertaining, and this totally delivered. The characters feel real, with plenty of awkward moments and laugh out loud situations. I found myself smiling during chores because I couldn’t wait to get back to it. The romance builds in a way that feels natural and earned, not rushed. It kept me entertained from start to finish and was perfect for winding down after long days. Easy to enjoy and hard to pause.
