Publisher's summary

An obstinate girl who will not be married.

A soldier desperate to prove himself.

A kingdom on the brink of war.

With a sharp tongue and an unruly temper, Sage Fowler is not what they'd call a lady, which is perfectly fine with her. Deemed unfit for marriage, Sage is apprenticed to a matchmaker and tasked with wrangling other young ladies to be married off for political alliances. She spies on the girls - and on the soldiers escorting them.

As the girls' military escort senses a political uprising, Sage is recruited by a handsome soldier to infiltrate the enemy ranks. The more she discovers as a spy, the less certain she becomes about whom to trust - and Sage becomes caught in a dangerous balancing act that will determine the fate of her kingdom.

With secret identities and a tempestuous romance, The Traitor's Kiss is Jane Austen with an espionage twist.

Worth the Wait

For the first hour or so of the book I definitely thought I was in for a rough ride. It's a smidge slow and confusing to start, but once you grasp everything it's literally fantastic. It's so easy to lose yourself in both the romance and the action. It's made my cross country road trip seem like an hour long trek!

Such a great book

I literally just finished this book and I'm diving on the second one because oh my goodness I love these characters and this world. (Vague spoiler beyond this point, but I won't name names) As a mom, something that happened in the later half of the book was super difficult to get through, but all in all I think it was worth it. The ending was very heartwarming and had me in happy tears. Definitely recommend this book!

Great book, terrible audio quality

The book gets 5 stars. The Audible recording gets 1 star. The book is a fun and interesting twist on YA fantasy. It reminds me of how much I loved Tamora Pierce's first series. With that said, the audio quality is terrible. I have 30+ Audible books and this is the first one with poor audio quality. There's a subtle crackle to the narrator's voice, possibly due to a bad/broken mic. It's distracting enough that I prefer the book over the audio version.

Not what I expected!

What made the experience of listening to The Traitor's Kiss the most enjoyable?

I really loved the story the most, but the narrator didn't distract - which was nice. The story reminded me a lot of "The False Prince". It was a fun book and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Decent

This book was not what I was expecting. The story wasn't bad, just slow to excitement. I thought that the advantage of a spy would be interesting, however, left much to be desired. The way the book was written, as far as the view point, was different and a tad confusing if you aren't paying attention. Also, I'm not one for high pitched narrators and having a woman do all the voices is harder for me to enjoy.

Strong girl, smart men, intrigue & evil plots

What a fun new series to discover! I really enjoyed this story, it has all the typical elements of a successful YA book, but a bit more. The female lead is a smart but flawed character that is dealing with loss and lack of family love, but despite a challenging future she remains kind and really focuses on staying true to herself. The relationship she develops with the male lead is authentic, builds slowly and develops in a way that is respectful (well, except for the lying -but it is a spy novel after all, there has to be some lying). What I really liked though, is the relationship develops after spending time together and getting to know one another and observing how they treat people around them. I also liked the other male characters in the books, they were loyal, respectful, sometimes funny and honest. The other female characters in the story were a great mix of support characters as well, the super smart and perceptive matchmaker, the loyal and kind new bestie, the vapid brides. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am really looking forward to the next in the series. I'll be buying extra credits so I can jump right in.

I only gave 3 stars on narration, as with many audiobooks the narration starts out really rough and choppy, I almost gave up on it because of the reading style in the beginning but by the end, it felt like the narrator hit her stride. The point that was almost a deal-breaker was the men's voices - these are strong, smart soldiers in their early 20's but in the beginning of the novel they all sounded like 10-year-old children. As I said, by about mid-novel the narration gets better, but it's a tough start.

Just okay

The story was just okay, not a very good plot twist and it felt like it had potential but never really took off

Plot twists and Kisses and Lies Oh My!

Loved. Loved. Loved. Very well developed! Don't read too many reviews though!! The plot twists are too good to spoil before reading the whole novel!
