For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together. It’s Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts, and two families are unraveling. Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Publisher's summary
State Road 177 runs along the Suwannee River, between Fargo, Georgia, and the Okefenokee Swamp. Drive that route from east to west, and you'll cross six bridges. Take it from west to east, and you might find seven. But you'd better hope not. Titus and Melanie Bell leave their hotel in Fargo for a second honeymoon canoeing the Okefenokee Swamp. But shortly before they reach their destination, they draw up to a halt at the edge of a rickety bridge with old stone pilings, with room for only one car....
When, much later, a tow-truck arrives, the driver finds Titus lying in the middle of the road, but Davina is nowhere to be found.

An Enjoyable Listen
Generally speaking, I enjoyed the story. It was well-paced and had an interesting concept. I absolutely loved all three of the old lady characters, although I wish we had seen more of Nettie. I also liked the character of Cameron a lot.
I enjoyed the humor infused throughout the story, but I didn't feel like there was enough of a sense of dread. It honestly didn't seem like anyone really cared about this missing woman, which seemed odd, especially for a town where this has been happening ever 13 years.
I also felt like I needed a little background about the town. I mean, there were things going on in this town that just don't happen in most places.
The narrator was okay, but not my favorite. he had a tendency to make the characters, especially Cam, Melanie, Jess, and Titus, sound really whiny. He also had this strange lilt or cadence in his voice that made him sound a little monotonous at times.
So, bottom line, a good book, but not a great one.

Wonderful
I loved it. It reminded me of Steven King, to a point. My only nitpick is the audio seemed to drag in places making accents feel over done. I adjusted the play back speed to 1.15 and that seemed to clear it up for me. Could have been a bad dowlload or even just my phone.

Perfect summer horror read
Southern Gothic horror is the best choice for horror to enjoy during the summer. The heat & humidity plus the shadows the trees throw when the summer sun starts to set just lend to the perfect atmosphere on the mountaintop I live on to put on a Southern Gothic book & this was the perfect choice for today’s book. Atmospheric and suspenseful, this is a great choice of book to read!

Don't Pay It
Ridiculous story that starts off well, then takes a dive after ghosts appear to be commonplace and acceptable. Decent performance but cringe-worthy writing. Especially bad the umpteenth time I heard a line repeated in one of the closing chapters that I can't repeat or it would spoil what there is of the plot. Silly.

Boring
I loved Cherie Priest's other novel "The Family Plot", but this one was painfully, painfully boring. I never fast forward through audiobooks, but this one was so repetitive and there was so little plot, I felt like I had to. The ending was so unfulfilling. I was super disappointed. Try her other books and skip this one.

The people of Fall River, Massachusetts, fear me. Perhaps rightfully so. I remain a suspect in the brutal deaths of my father and his second wife despite the verdict of innocence at my trial. With our inheritance, my sister, Emma, and I have taken up residence in Maplecroft, a mansion near the sea and far from gossip and scrutiny. But it is not far enough from the affliction that possessed my parents. Their characters, their very souls, were consumed from within by something that left malevolent entities in their place.

Nor can they deny the memories of that summer, so long ago—the strange magic taught to them by an even stranger man, and the terrible act that has followed them all into adulthood.

Nellie Gardner is looking for a way out of an abusive marriage when she learns that her long-lost grandfather, August Redfern, has willed her his turpentine estate. She throws everything she can think of in a bag and flees to Georgia with her eleven-year-old son, Max, in tow. It turns out that the "estate" is a decrepit farmhouse on a thousand acres of old (rotting) pine forest, but Nellie is thrilled about the chance for a fresh start for her and Max. So it takes her a while to notice the strange scratching in the walls, the faint whispering at night, how the forest is eerily quiet.

Chuck Dutton built Music City Salvage with patience and expertise, stripping historic properties and reselling their bones. Inventory is running low, so he's thrilled when Augusta Withrow appears in his office offering salvage rights to her entire property. This could be a gold mine, so he assigns his daughter, Dahlia, to personally oversee the project. The crew finds a handful of surprises right away. Firstly, the place is in unexpectedly good shape. And then there's the cemetery, about 30 fallen and overgrown graves dating to the early 1900s.

Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Val: The queen bee. Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires. Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight…until now.

It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

The hooker was young, pretty...and dead, butchered in a Greenwich Village apartment. The prime suspect, a minister's son, was also dead, the victim of a jailhouse suicide. The case is closed, as far as the NYPD is concerned. Now the murdered prostitute's father wants it opened again--that's where Matthew Scudder comes in.

He's a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: he'll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

Set in a beautiful but economically devastated Pennsylvania steel town, American Rust is a novel of the lost American dream and the desperation-as well as the acts of friendship, loyalty, and love-that arise from its loss. From local bars to train yards to prison, it is the story of two young men, bound to the town by family, responsibility, inertia, and the beauty around them, who dream of a future beyond the factories and abandoned homes.

You probably haven't noticed them. But they've noticed you. They notice everything. That's their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers' work habits. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They're heisters.

This discovery begins a quest for the truth about her father, the mother he rarely speaks about, and ultimately herself.
