This book continues the fictional conversations between the author, Ron Mindzak, and the Immortal Waiter. The discussion raises the question of the cost of not dying with regret but instead living a short happy life full of promises. Is that life worth the cost? Some of the stories here are darker, bringing up the question of the Waiter’s moral compass in how he addresses that question. The issue becomes, does the Waiter have the right to interfere in people’s lives, especially if it leads to their demise.
The author brings up the point that shorter lives, based on their café view, extend the Waiter’s life. Is there some self-serving reason the Waiter selects customers and their views? Or is it something else entirely? Is he altruistic? If so, his definition of helping people is questionable, at least to the author.
The concept of fate is brought up, is it real? What is the Waiter’s connection to fate? Does he work for, with, or against fate? How much does fate interfere in a person’s life? There is a story in this book that goes into detail about an old man’s life. The Waiter tells the author how fate took control and provided a favorable path to this man’s old age, without the Waiter’s help. For the Waiter, this old man’s visit provides some insight into fate but little into why he and his café exist.
These stories are intended to add depth to the Waiter and allow you to get a better understanding of him and his purpose for bringing his café into existence for select customers. The Waiter postulates that whatever the mechanism of his immortality, his decisions must be in line with his created purpose since he is still alive. If he were wrong, he assumes he would simply cease to exist.
After reading these stories, would you make the same decisions the Waiter does? The author himself has no answer to that question and leaves the café with even more questions about the Waiter.
Read these stories and form your own opinion of the Waiter, there are more stories to come. At least enjoy the coffee, it is the best of any time.
