They include Theo, the Lindbergh’s scion with a secret of his own; Daphne, a nurse and Army veteran struggling with her faith; Jason, a local contractor uncertain how to deal with his gifted teenage son; Karson, a young lawyer and activist wrestling with a job offer that makes him uncomfortable; David, an Athens music scene lifer whose sobriety has been sorely tested by isolation; and Dorothy, a widow just beginning to regain her bearings.

The fates of these individuals—and their fateful encounter with Tina Lamm—become intertwined in a story that is by turns funny, touching, and tense. As he did in How Lucky, Will Leitch illuminates how we live today through a story of human beings struggling to do their best.

"Anna Caputo and Jane Oppenheimer do a masterful job of crafting individual voices that fit the personalities of each person. Each chapter focuses on a particular character, and every detail of the plot is clear--in part because of deft narration. Minor characters, too, are handled with aplomb. The narrators' Southern accents help differentiate the characters. This well-written novel has a unique structure, and its narration is consistently top-notch." (AudioFile)

Excellent character development

Exciting, vivid story about a town I know well. Thanks for digging deep and creating believable characters and a thrilling story.

the characters were strong, well-developed

I grew up in Arhens, so really enjoyed the trip back in time. I was struck by how intensely the past impacted the present. The author's treatment of racial conflicts and divisions was well done. a good read!

Interesting tale

Lots of characters that I grew to like, a storyline I was interested to follow, decent conflict near the end but the overall ending left me wanting a bit more. Love this author, though, and am excited for the next one.
