2017 Gold Medal Winner for Best Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror E-Book Independent Publisher Book Awards

A nobleman from an infamous family, an imperial legionary officer, and a born fighter, Captain Ben Stiger has successfully thwarted the attack from an army of the Cyphan Confederacy. Now Stiger, his men, and his new dwarven allies have fallen back behind the great walls of Castle Vrell. Stiger finds himself named Legate of the Vanished, the long-lost 13th Legion. This title and his own word binds him to the terms of the Compact, an ancient and mystical alliance formed nearly 2,000 years before.

The snows have come, and the mountain summit into Vrell is impassable. On one side of the pass sits an army of the Cyphan Confederacy some 20,000 strong. On the other sits Stiger, his company, the remnants of the 13th Legion, and a dwarven army. Each side is waiting for the spring thaw.

Bottled up in the Vrell valley, Stiger and his elven companion, Eli, learn of Garand Thoss, an ancient and abandoned dwarven city. Within its hallowed halls resides a prize of unimaginable value - a prize that will reveal the true history of the empire and force Stiger to face a new enemy more deadly than he has ever faced before.

Is the next book available?

This has turned out to be another keeper! I must admit that I'm extremely frugal with my five star ratings and during the month of November I've used them twice! My keeper shelf overfloweth, Both authors have made and surpassed the water mark of fantasy. MarkAlan Edelheit did not soften any action as his descriptions of a battle and all that caused it, graphically are shown. If this had been all there was to the book, it would have just another ten hours of blood and guts, no where close to a Five. He paints the characters full of humanity's foibles and the interaction between them is definitive and charges the book. Based on the Roman Legions of yore, I was stunned when our Roman leader finds that Rome was not old wives tales but had actually existed! That's only one of many subtle signals the author gives so that I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Steven Brand is a new narrator to me so I was pleasantly surprised at the acumen and depth he brings to the book. He definately rated a five without any doubt at all! Tiger's Fate is an excellent book, well read. What more matters?

Still fun, but ...

I loved the first 2 books in the series. I usually only listen to audiobooks to pass the time on long car rides, but with Books 1 & 2 I devoured them whenever I had the chance. I’ve had a real hunger for heavy military fiction with a touch of fantasy, & the Stiger novels largely satisfied this need. The voice for Stiger is absolutely on point - really brings out the gruff, gravelly voice of the reluctant Legate.

Book 3 is still adequately interesting, but almost everything I loved that made the series unique was so muted or erased entirely. The primary problem I have with Book 3 is that it abandons its roots & fully dives into its fantasy elements which are honestly quite stale. Elves who dig forests & shoot bows. Stubborn, heavily armored dwarves who live underground & are all about that honor. Tribal berserker orcs who of course are all evil. Paladins with light powers. Good/neutral/evil gods. These things are all wonderful in a vacuum, but they’re also used a lot & the author adds in barely any of his own flavor to the mix. & I absolutely despise time travel. It’s such a cheap way to raise the stakes, especially in the cookie-cutter way Edelheit seems to be using it here.

Not many novels I’ve read took the time to really dig into organization, fatigue, communication, scouting, & logistics in warfare. That’s what I loved about Books 1 & 2 & what set them apart - a hard, gritty military fiction that explores the dark side of conquest & war with a touch of fantasy. Book 3 feels like a world of Warcraft novel, but the humans have Roman armor. Everything’s pretty much white & black, good vs. evil. At least Stiger isn’t romancing the elven princess - yet.

This isn’t even mentioning all of dropped buildup. Remember that lieutenant Eikley Stiger was mentoring? He’s stuck at the castle. Have love-struck Lann instead - the cavalry guy who’s been largely apart from Stiger in all of the fighting. Remember when they said supplying a sieging army at Vrell would be super difficult? Well the Syfan army is camping outside vrell in the winter having lost both generals & thousands of men. Why are they still there? Why do they hate Dwarves so much again? Speaking of dwarves, they seem to entirely live under mountains. What do they eat & how do they grow enough of it? How do they do ventilation? The dwarves prepared for orcs going through the mines but not the minion of Castor? Eli, Stiger’s best friend, isn’t with him in his ultimate challenge? There just seem to be so many missed opportunities & overlooked details.

I was hoping the Stiger series would be the story of a man who, cut off & under siege, forged the legion & the valley people into something new, better even perhaps than the Empire.

Instead I now have an inter-dimensional war between the gods & their pawns over the universe which will be decided by a reluctant chosen one.

Fantastic series!

This series keeps me on the edge of my seat. I listen in the car and find myself looking for excuses to drive around.

Amazing story with an amazing narrator!

Really glad that I stumbled upon this series. Honestly, the only reason I bought it was because Steven Brand was the narrator.

written by a toddler

Genuinely some of the worst writing I have ever listened to. Middle schoolers could have written a more coherent story than anything Marc Edelheit

Great

The whole series is outstanding and it shocked me that I have gotten into it, as I am not a fan of fantasy books.

Great heroic fiction

Enjoyed this immensely with my son. Plan to listen to the entire series while we share father-son bonding time.

second time around was even better.

I love this book and series. I took some time to read some reviews. I dont understand some of the trolls that find it necessary to belittle a book of author. this book was interesting, very suspenseful, and well written. in my humble opinion it was a excellent read.

Glad I am not an orc

It is not easy to be a dragon, but even harder to be a Legionaire soldier

Finishing and starting

I finished this book but all is not lost, the next is a few clicks away! The accent of the narrator was totally appropriate for the book. I was initially worried about the turn to fantasy from military science fiction, but I got over it and am ready to continue.
