Publisher's summary

John Knox, the Thundering Scott, lives a life of adventure and danger in turbulent, corrupt 16th-century Scotland. Finding himself a wanted man, Knox is besieged in a castle by French soldiers, seized, and made a galley slave. Yet he is unflinching in his stand for the gospel, even in the face of assassins and death, and even when his fiery preaching makes him an enemy of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Told from the perspective of a young student resolved to protect Knox no matter the cost, Douglas Bond's thrilling biographical novel provides a look at the harrowing life story of a giant of the faith.

Discover the fascinating story of a timid man transformed by the grace and power of the gospel into one of the most influential figures in Scottish history.

Excellent!

I loved this historical account of the great life and courage of the man-on-fire, John Knox. Told from the perspective of a fictional student, the style echos hints of Henty's epic stories. The narration is in a beautiful authentic Scottish brogue, which instantly transports the reader to the place and time of the events, yet it is not so heavy an accent as to create any extra effort in the listening. Well done and worthy of a second listen!

Fascinating and inspiring!

I love historical fiction especially based on a beloved person who actually lived. This book is very well done. I like how it was from the perspective of one who grew up learning from and following this great man of God, John Knox. The narrator was excellent! I’ll definitely be reading more from this author. But first I’m going to listen to this one again. I know I often miss quite a bit my first tome through a book like this.

Powerful and Entertaining

Listened in preparation for a vacation in Edinburgh to learn about John Knox and the reformation. I loved hearing actual Calvinist/reformist sermons in historic context. Narrator is endearing as is the adventure story line. Puts the reader in the middle of the action, and you realize how necessary Protestant reform was. Makes me appreciate my Presbyterian ancestors and want to learn more, especially about predestination and why that was such a focus. I’m grateful for having discovered this wonderful book.

So Moving

Wow. This is my second time to listen to this book. I'm glad I gave it a second chance, because for whatever reason the first time I was very distracted. Well this time it was brilliant. It's exactly as one would imagine a scholar of Knox doing or saying as he follow his teacher. This is a novel of the great Protestant Scottish reformer John Knox. And if follows what is known about his life linearly and in great detail. It's absolutely delightful. For any person who loves listening to our heroes of the Faith, this is not to be missed. Stefan Rudnicki does a great Scottish accent. EXCELLENT all the way around,

Enjoyed the reminder!

So easily we forget the cost, always paid in blood, for the freedoms we take for granted daily. Though written as a fiction, I checked most of the characters written about and they indeed existed in the positions they held in the "fictional" book.
The author must have spent a good amount of time in research for this book!

incredibly inaccurate portrayal

I was looking forward to this one and hoped it would be good but the historical timeline and so many basic facts were just wrong and very easily disputed. There wasn't even a reason to change the facts so much. overall very disappointing.
