Publisher's summary

In the early hours of a summer morning, a young woman steps into the path of an oncoming bus. A tragic accident? Or suicide? At the center of this puzzle is Adrian Wolfe, a successful architect and grief-stricken widower, who, a year after his third wife's death, begins to investigate the cause. As Adrian looks back on their brief but seemingly happy marriage, disturbing secrets begin to surface.

The divorces from his two previous wives had been amicable, or so it seemed; his children, all five of them, were resilient as ever, or so he thought. But something, or someone, must have pushed Maya over the edge.

Fans of Liane Moriarty and Jojo Moyes will be captivated by this riveting family drama with a dark mystery at its core.

Another relevant and thought provoking book

I started this book and didn’t immediately get into it, I even listened to another before going back to it. It got better and better though and I thought the narrator did an awesome job narrating so many different characters and I would definitely listen to more read by him.

I really like Lisa Jewell’s books, it’s the second novel by here I’ve listened to and they were both very different but both similar in showing how disfunctional families can be and very current with mental health and how people feel.

I am glad she has more books because I will be choosing my next book for my wish list.

Interesting message

I enjoyed the narration of each character. The story was sometimes slow but still kept me interested.

A real “page turner!”

Great story with well-developed characters. It tells hard truths about being a family. Suspenseful til the end. Sad that it’s over!

Good, but not a favorite

The book was ok, narration was good. I love her books, but this one was not one of my favorites. I found myself wanting to skip past some of the family dialogue.

Pretty Unrealistic

This book has an odd main character with a very unconventional family structure. He has three wives and multiple children with the first and second wife and believes them to be one large happy family. While it's not strange for a family to have endured divorce and have half siblings living together, the attitude he has to the wives and the interactions resembles a polygamist marriage in many ways, so that part of the book seems pretty unbelievable. However, if you move past that, then it's a pretty entertaining book. Just accept that it's pretty unrealistic. It's fiction.

Should have gotten more than 4 stars IMO

One of my favorite Lisa Jewell books. So many life lessons and yet kind of a "who dunnit" mystery.

Good book.

Lisa Jewell is a wonderful writer who has a gift for in golfing a reader in a story.
This book is well written, definitely not her best story line but a new idea that made for a good book.
It truly is a profound outlook on how as parents our actions really do effect our child's lives.

Powerful Story but Ultimately Not Believable

The writing is up to Jewel’s usual high standards and the many characters are depicted and performed skillfully. It was a page turner with a plot that kept me on the edge of my seat and the characters evolved convincingly as it progressed. Unfortunately, I found the ending quite contrived and unconvincing.
