Publisher's Summary

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored and utterly out of place.

But her quiet existence is shattered when she stumbles across a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page reveals more impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Critic Reviews

"A gorgeous, aching love letter to stories, storytellers and the doors they lead us through...absolutely enchanting." (Christina Henry, best-selling author of Alice)

"A gorgeously written story of love and longing, of what it means to lose your place in the world and then have the courage to find it again. This book is a door I'm glad to have opened." (Kat Howard, author of An Unkindness of Magicians)

"A tantalising quest through strange and beautiful places and a love story that spans time, worlds and magic. I couldn't put it down." (Peng Shepherd, author of The Book of M)

Melodrama

Fun. Interesting concepts. 30% too long. Melodrama is the best description I can think of esp after the way too Baroque ending

Have come across this same story concept (or conceit) it multiple other far better written books/series

Whilst this was a pleasant read it is not a new idea and has been written about in both Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials and also The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. Both offer the superior prose, and wonderous imagery, that this novel seemed to be lacking. It is a tough call to write a book like this when it has already been done, along with missing parents, betraying guardians, the search for real ally’s, a budding romance, a coming of age and into power and a battle for a better future not just for self but for all, there is also even the trusty animal sidekick who can sense danger. I am loathe to give a bad or even average review, but how could an editor let this book be published when there are multiple other books that tackle this concept that have been worldwide best sellers?

great worldbuilding with a stupid MC

In almost every tense situation the main character either freezes or does something stupid. Like when you hold an armed enemy at gunpoint its definitely time to close your eyes and grief for someone you lost...

The story begins with the last two chapters

The book began interesting with the last two chapters. Actually you only need to read the last to chapters to understand the entire book. It was though an easy book to follow.

A magical journey!

This is one of those books that comes along every now and then, that stands out from the others. The language is exquisite, the narrative compelling. I didn’t want the book to end and knew I’d feel a sense of loss when it did. The narrator is wonderful, the characters well drawn. I just want to find another read as good as this again soon! If you enjoy the unusual and magical, you’ll love this book!

I really thought this would be a good story it had so much potential but found I didn’t care about the girl she really annoyed me. I feel I wasted my time and didn’t finish it I was so frustrated by it

Great concepts & writing but rather depressing

I started out loving this book but as it progressed I just wanted it to end. Perhaps it's just a personal view. I found the overall tone of the book unrelentingly bleak & rather depressing. I found it rather repetitive & that made it seem over long. I will still try another book by this author, as so much about is good.

Wonderfully magical

In the early 1900s, a young woman embarks on a fantastical journey of self-discovery after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut.

I’m sure this book will be a classic. It transported me to ten thousand other worlds.

Only just started but...

already loving it! If you liked Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell, you’ll LOVE this. It’s got that same history/fantasy feel to it including footnotes. Have been looking for something like JS&MrN for years! Brilliant stuff.

A brilliant story from a wonderful storyteller

What a brilliant book this is. The language soars and the story is spell binding. The narrator is perfect for both words and story. A treat!

Twists and turns

A show placed story that can be difficult to follow at times. Characters are well developed.

This was one of those books you're not sure about when you read the blurb but quickly feel pleased you embarked on the journey. Love it and will reread as I feel ill get more from it in the next reading.

it's ok, but not captivating DNF

a girl who feels different and doesn't quite fit in but has big feelings and a big imagination. this is an unimaginative version of that.

The writing is very self conscious, you can hear the author's voice as the author writing and not as a narrator. it's very distracting and at times quite self centred or self reverential.

my 7 year old daughter might have enjoyed it, but it would be too long and drawn out for her.

it feels like it could be good but it just ain't it.

Magic!

Though not the greatest book.. it’s very good.
And though not the best narration, it’s also very good.
And I cried my way to the end.

Stunning!

I loved this book! Maybe cos I'm a self-titled Grammar Nerd and lover of books in general. And considering the story was about a book and the writing of it and the secrets it holds I got drawn in very quickly!

One of the best books I've read in years.

Tenacious girl/woman protagonist, mysticism in the mundane, warrior-turned-nanny, moral ambiguity, romance but not without plot, prose like no other. Harrow has done it again. If you liked The Once and Future Witches, you'll feel right at home.
