Ships are sent to investigate a series of signals from the spatial desert bordering the Coalition after a series of probes are lost. The crew discovers a destroyed planet covered in radioactivity and noxious chemicals. As the vessels draw near, they are subject to withering fire from the dead world.
Lieutenant Mikal Rush leads a squadron of fighters to explore the ruins, retrieving clues in the wreckage at a terrible cost.
Continuing their exploration, they discover the planet Tirel, finding the atmosphere and large parts of the surface ripped away. Rush and his pilots are attacked; lives are lost. Finding the destruction came from Coalition space, it staggers their collective imaginations.
The future of the Coalition becomes inexplicably tied to frightening events of the distant past.
