Publisher's summary

The end of the world with dragons and Levels

The world ends in a slew of blue notification boxes, bringing with it a game-like existence including monsters and Classes. Now, John has to make his way from Kluane National Park in the Yukon to Whitehorse through monster-infested forests. But, that's not enough; because he'll need to help rebuild civilization itself around the System, aliens, and monsters.

And, as always, humanity will be its own greatest enemy.

This collection contains the first three books of the highly rated System Apocalypse series (Life in the North, Redeemer of the Dead, and the Cost of Survival) and completes the first arc—Whitehorse and the Yukon and the first year of the apocalypse.

The System Apocalypse contains elements of games like level ups, experience, enchanted materials, a sarcastic spirit, mecha, a beguiling dark elf, monsters, minotaurs, a fiery red-head, and a semi-realistic view on violence and its effects. Does not include harems.

Only redeeming quality is the narrator

Nick does a great job like he always does story is very meh character are kinda flat has random sexual descriptions that are like the whole characters. main character is one of the worst Mc's I've ever read whines about his ex cheating on him and then seemingly tries to start multiple relationships. Wish there was a warning he's bi in the description because it's really not something I'd even attempt to listen to if I'd known. Im not the author so its up to him but a warning would be nice. Mc otherwise has a laundry list of things that make no sense or are irritating but give it a shot at your own risk.

if you have nothing else

first of all the Mc is serious emo, always about the rage
second this is written like some simp losers Dream of being the angry hero.
those are the two most annoying parts, but there are several other annoying parts, the story has enough meat to warrant listening if there is nothing else, and I have say the narrator was extremely good

My first DNF. Ever.

I originally hadn't planned on listening to this series after the author decided to channel his inner "Aleron Kong" and try some shady copyright stuff with the words "System Apocalypse" (Seriously? It's like it I named a book "LITrpg" then got mad when people used those words.)

But, I'm a huge fan of Nick Podehl and picked it up on those grounds.

As someone who has listened to both HWFWM and ELLC, I don't think I've met a character more annoying than this series. Like holy smokes, the inner rage baby Schick got really old really freaking quick. I tried to finish, but it was just so, so very bad. "I'm a loner with anger issues and my girlfriend left me, and I make bad decisions." for someone who wants to go after people for frivolous copyright claims, he sure had no problem with the poor imitation of every bad fantasy trope in the book.

Don't waste your time or credits.

Just missing that extra bit to make it great

I like these books for a casual listen. I think the thing that feels like it falls short for me is that there isn't a lot of build up and payoff. Like there will be a huge fight and then the reward is exactly the same as the much lower level and less risky fights. It leaves the whole thing feeling meh... I think they are good filler if you are waiting for some other LitRPG's to come out. (Looking at you The Land... looking at you.)

Thank God for Nick

The story is a slog to get through, but really, anyone who buys this (including myself) it’s our own fault. It’s a bland read and even from the description it should be made plain that it’s gonna be a drag. Only reason I attempted to listen was because Nick Podehl is one of the best audio readers out there.

I like the different take on litrpg. I did not care for politics. but the story is engaging and the fights are fun

Sexual confused dude🤷‍♂️

Sorry, not into books with gay MC. I like to imagine being the MC when I read. The act of dude on dude stuff is disgusting🤷‍♂️. Book would be great if it did not have that in it.

Could've been better

Nick Podehl does an amazing job narrating this story.
I really enjoyed the concept of what Tao Wong was trying to create. Unfortunately, the character development was a bit lacking. The MC never seemed to learn any real lessons, just kept talking about his pent-up anger. I'm 3 books in and decided to see if the story gets better in the next book. On the plus side, Tao Wong does an incredible job giving descriptions of the battle scenes.

Not bad.

Revisiting this storyvafter few years. One of the oldest litrpg series,it was a groundbreaking book in the time. After few years thou it did not age so well-or maybe its me not liking how emo MC really is,or how his emo idiocy is boosted by narrator with his very intense voiceplay.Overall story is not bad, idea is good, only MC personality and narrator made it worse for me,bad combination in my opinion.

enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

when I read the turning earth to a dungeon. I thought oh another dungeon crawler Carl. who's is so good. but it's not. it has its own story and not televised. the main character is rather good. he has his issues and he's not an op god. give this book a try I think you'll enjoy it

The System Apocalypse Books 1-3

I very much enjoyed this for what it was, an apocalypse turning out to be in the format of an RPG, if that is what you are expecting then you will be fine. There is a good deal of description and interaction between people as well as fighting. I am now looking forward to the next book. :-)

audio good story bad

mc is grating to listen too, 0 character growth and a generally uninteresting take on litrpg

not terrible, not great

narrator was good, main protagonist was too whiny and writer pushes too many agendas too aggressively
