Publisher's summary

Over the years investigator Joe Gunther has battled drug pushers and corporate swindlers, grappled with environmental conspirators, and foiled gangs and home invaders. But while usually successful in his fight for the future of the small town of Brattleboro, Vermont, Gunther hasn't always come out on top.

Thirty years earlier, store owner Klaus Oberfeldt was robbed and beaten senseless. When Klaus died six months later, a case of assault and battery became first-degree murder. The guilty man eventually appeared to be a well-known, small-time crook, but enough time had elapsed for him to vanish. Gunther, distracted by his wife's losing struggle with cancer in the same hospital where Klaus was slipping from life, did something that would plague him for the rest of his career: He let the case go cold, burying it in the past along with his private sorrows.

Now serendipitously reopened, the Oberfeldt investigation forces Gunther to revisit ancient history and open old wounds. Torn between righting the past and confronting his demons, the veteran cop faces the most personal and dangerous case of his career. For somewhere on the idyllic Brattleboro streets stalks a long-lost murderer who never quite disappeared - and with Joe's renewed interest, now has good reason to kill again.

yay! phasing out Gail!

Not a Gail fan obviously. Did anyone Notice old Natalie sounds just like Gail? Awful voice for a supposed young vivacious woman.

always excellent entertainment

I do love Mayor's books. they have solid themes and excellent plots. the only place I have a little problem is with the multitude of characters. I'm really glad he keeps a base of characters, but if you take breaks from the book, you do tend to forget who's what and where. His books dig deeply into the American psyche. I love the fact that he keeps the books in the same geographical location and in Vermont you can reach a lot of different states with a short car trip. A great entertaining read and I do love listening to them on audible

The Story Carries It

Loved the current tie in to an old cold case of Joe's - the storyline, characters, locations & writing are great ... as to the narration, I'm a huge fan of Joe's voice, as well as the core group of other males; however, the women's are all starting to grate a bit. Unfortunately it may be because I just took a break from the series and finally heard someone with an extensive range to handle a cast of female voices. Looking forward to the next attempt though!

Joe has to face his past

Another great book in the Joe Gunther series!! This time Joe has to face his past, when he had to watch his wife pass away from cancer and he let a case go cold. In this book the case comes back front and center when the gun used in a crime is tied to an armed robbery decades ago. I highly recommend this audiobook

Love this series!

I have to be honest, I found the series on Audible and was just looking for audio books that were included with my membership. I was so lucky to find the series, lt is well written and thoroughly entertaining for those who like police procedurals. It is not my favorite genre, as I am into the supernatural and also write books that are Supernatural, but a good story is a good story and Joe Gunther is a great character. The supporting characters, especially Willie conkle( I'm not sure if I'm spelling that correctly as I've only listened to the books) are not just mere side characters but are complex and interesting. I highly recommend this series!

Poignant

I have enjoyed every book I've read in this series, some more than others. This one for some reason made me cry, which I don't do often when reading fiction. The scenes with Hannah's mother were particularly poignant to me.
As usual, Tom Taylorson did an outstanding job. I have sought out other books he has narrated and now have a hard time listening to anyone else!

One of his best

I still had to keep going back to keep characters straight but the story was very good. One of his best.

Joe and Tom awesome as always

Sometimes digging up old things can be fun and enlightening and sometimes not so much fun. This one is enlightening and interesting - fun for us readers - but not always so much for Joe.
Nice story line and definitely a lot of twists and turns to the truth, but he always gets there!
