Publisher's summary

From the acclaimed author of Revealed comes a tale of first loves and second chances. Lady Jane Cummings is certain that her summer is ruined when she is forced to reside at isolated Merrymere Lake with her reckless brother and ailing father. Her fast-paced London society is replaced with a small town grapevine. But one bit of gossip catches Jane's attention - rumors that the lake's brooding new resident is also an elusive highwayman.

Jane must face the much discussed mysterioso after he saves her brother from a pub brawl. She immediately recognizes him from London: Byrne Worth, war hero and apparent hermit - whom she finds strangely charming. The two build a fast friendship, and soon nothing can keep this Lady away from Merrymere's most wanted. Convinced of his innocence, Jane is determined to clear Byrne's name - and maybe have a little fun this summer after all.

Too Many Disagreeable Characters

My interest in a bit of escapism has collided with the reality of how controlled women were in this era by men who were less capable than they. Brother Jason is, in a word: a Jerk. To use a few more words, he's selfish, insensitive and autocratic.

In addition to Jason's unappealing qualities, the characters who people the village in which the story is set are nearly all suspicious, devious and mean-spirited.

I read non-fiction to improve my mind. I read these Audible Escapes to do this that: escape. As I do not want to spend my leisure time with this many disagreeable people, I'm quitting half-way in before I become as crochety as the village folk.

Slow Start - Big Finish

I've thoroughly enjoyed the Blue Raven series. This book took a bit longer to get started. Too much emphasis on secondary characters before main characters's story got rolling. Once it did get going it did not disappoint. Even a slow start is not enough to deter. If you like historical romances Kate Noble is a must!

Really enjoyed this read!

Great story and narration! Would have been better without the sex scene and three F words. Thankfully the sex scene can be skipped and are not constant. Otherwise a great series.

Am I listening to the same book?

I feel like I’m in the twilight zone. This is horrifically horrible. I’d love to blame it all on the elderly narrator who makes the main character sound like she’s 87 years old in addition to being screechy and whiny, the brother - who to be fair, appears to be the stupidest human being who ever lived - sound like a complete buffoon, the ancillary characters all land somewhere on the same spectrum from ancient squawking to imbecilic ranting.

Unfortunately, it’s not just the tragedy of a narration the has my stomach rolling - I’m over an hour and a half into the “story” and I have no idea what is the point of this story. So, nope, not going to invest 11 more hours of my life into this massive waste of time.

Slow beginning

Good book. The first one was better I think. But it did pick up halfway through and make for a good read.

The buzzing

I really liked the book, but there was a strange buzzing in chapter 23 that made my dog lose it. That’s not on the narrator, though. She does a good job distinguishing between characters and inflections. Overall, good story. I really liked getting to know Jane after the previous story she was in.

Riveting

This is book 2 in the series. I enjoyed book 1 enough to continue and I’m glad I did. This was a better story by far. Both of these main characters featured quite a bit in the first book and I liked them better than the heroine and hero of that story. You get to revisit people introduced in the previous installment so series continuity is excellent. The ending is very satisfying. Characters are well developed and place descriptions are rich. The narrator did a better job as well. People complain about her but I think she does a really great job. Editing and production could be better - spliced passages are definitely noticeable.

Love well given.

Been and Lady Jane have both gone to the country for different reasons, but their safety and how they go on may depend on each other.
A lovely story.

Overall -good

The hardest part I had was the word suddenly used again and again. There was a section or two in the middle where I felt bored as well.
