Publisher's Summary

This bittersweet novel by Jenny Han recounts the summer of Belly's 16th birthday. When she and her family arrive at the beach house that June, her longtime summer pal, Jeremiah, appears standoffish and awkward in her presence. And his older brother Conrad - her secret crush - seems distant and cold.

But her blossoming beauty isn't the only reason for their change in behavior. For as Belly enjoys the sun and surf, she'll ultimately learn the painful secret that dampens the spirit of her childhood friends.

Critic Reviews

"Romantic and heartbreakingly real ... the beautifully written novel ... perfectly blends romance, family drama, and a coming-of-age tale - one that is substantially deeper than most." ( Library Journal)

Great coming of age story

Any additional comments?

This book was very good. The author takes you from the present to the past to give you insight on all the characters and how they grew up together.

Come on Conrad you know you want Belly

Would you consider the audio edition of The Summer I Turned Pretty to be better than the print version?

I loved both the print and audio versions. This is a book I can re-read or listen to it over and over again.

My goodness, this is terrible.

This book sets a terrible example of healthy relationships for young readers. It’s difficult to root for any of the young characters, as they’re all too self-absorbed and distracted being absolutely hateful to each other. Vapid and embarrassing.

Sweet Summer Read

I found the story to be very innocent and sweet, I enjoyed most the way the story jumped back and forth through time. The narration was great, I am a faster reader though so I listened on 1.30x speed. This would have made a great beach book or summer read.

I expected better from Jenny Han

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Maybe. It's a fun, light read, but it lacks substance.

If you’ve listened to books by Jenny Han before, how does this one compare?

I read both To All the Boys I've loved Before and the Ashes to Ashes trilogy. The Summer I
Turned Pretty doesn't compare, to say the least. I was surprised by the lack of plot. I'm pretty sure this was her first book, and she's improved tremendously since writing it.

What three words best describe Jessica Almasy’s voice?

Too many pauses. She has a nice voice; she's easy to listen to, but she takes so many unnecessary pauses. Her tendency to pause in the middle of sentences (I suppose for dramatic effect--though none is needed) makes for choppy listening. Also, in my opinion, the pauses in between character dialogue were far too long. It's a shame, because she has great potential, but I would have preferred listening to this book read by a different narrator.

Could you see The Summer I Turned Pretty being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes. I think it would actually make for an entertaining film (one of those cheesy teen rom-coms). As for the actors, a young Mandy Moore would play a good Belly. I can't decide who I'd like to see play the boys.

Good book

As a plot : i found the story was good with very relate-able characters and good dialogue
As an Audio book it was good but the narrator is so SLOW and i got bored at the middle of the book until i fast forward it into 2×

but you can read it if you like a bed time story teller

The Performance or the character?

I really liked the “to all the boys” series so wanted to try something else by Jenny Han. Unfortunately this was a miss for me as I just did not like the main character Belly. I’m not sure if it was the performance or the actual character, but I just thought she was so annoying and could not understand what was so like-able about her. I felt like there wasn’t much depth to her as a character and was more whiny than anything. Even through some of the dramatic events, she was so immature and self-absorbed. I like a good nostalgic flashback to teenage love (like to all the boys), but this was meh. gave it a 3 because it wasn’t great, but it was okay enough to finish.

Ok story, horrible narrator

The story was ok. Predictable. I wanted to like the main character, but the narrator’s whiny baby voice made me dislike her so much.

I love this series so much.

I don't know how many times I've read this book since it was published but it feels right to re-read and re-listen to this series every spring when I know summer is just around the corner. I love the narrator's voice, her voice is how I imagine Belly's voice to be and she does bring the story into life with her narration. I totally recommend this audio book and I hope you'll love it as much as I do.

Abosolutley amazing

In my opinion this book is absolutely amazing it’s so addicting and I would recommend this book to anyone. I think the author Jenny Han has done an amazing job of capturing a young teens life and child hood in one book. Although the book is amazing I am not exactly keen on the voice of the narrator and the voice is slightly annoying and she reads a bit to slow for my taste with this all aside I cannot wait to ready the rest of the series!!

Fun and light to listen too

Although I have enjoyed listening to this book I found the back and forth chronological shifts confusing.
Other than that it was an easy listening.
