Publisher's summary

Miss Frederica "Free" Marshall has put her heart and soul into her newspaper, known for its outspoken support of women's rights. Naturally, her enemies are intent on destroying her business and silencing her for good. Free refuses to be at the end of her rope...but she needs more rope, and she needs it now. Edward Clark's aristocratic family abandoned him to die in a war-torn land, so he survived the only way he could: by becoming a rogue and a first-class forger. When the same family that left him for dead vows to ruin Miss Marshall, he offers his help. So what if he has to lie to her? She's only a pawn to use in his revenge. But the irrepressible Miss Marshall soon enchants Edward. By the time he realizes that his cynical heart is hers, it's too late. The only way to thwart her enemies is to reveal his scandalous past...and once the woman he loves realizes how much he's lied to her, he'll lose her forever. The Suffragette Scandal is the fourth full-length historical romance in The Brothers Sinister series.

Whoever thought a thimble would be romantic??

I have listened to the entire series to this point and have loved every book. I love Rosalyn Landor's narration. It wouldn't matter if she was reading a recipe.
I think this is my favorite. Sad to say but, knowing the Suffragette was coming I actually was thinking about not listening to it. I really didn't care much for Free as her character was coming along and the issues that occurred in Oliver's book with their Aunt Freddie.. just made me not like her as much. So there you have it.. judging a book by its cover.
Courtney Milan writes with such romance and humor. I will never look at a thimble the same.
No spoilers here.. You must read or listen to the book to understand the reference. I promise... you won't be sorry.
On to the next in the series... enjoy!

LOVED!!!

I get really overwhelmed when I'm faced with reviewing one of Courtney Milan's books.

I'm going to get really honest with all of you. I almost never buy books at retail price. I just don't. Most of my books are review copies, and the others? I'll wait for years for a book that I want to go on sale. YEARS. However, there are a few authors that I'll willingly shell out the big bucks for, and for Courtney Milan, I not only buy the ebook, but I also ALWAYS buy the audiobook too.

I have died over Rosalyn Landor's stellar narration of this series. In fact, when my daughter started listening to the audiobook of Mary Poppins, I screamed because I saw that Rosalyn Landor was the narrator. She simply KILLS it, just perfectly nailing the male and female voices. I wish most M/M narrators were up to her level, because she shows just flawlessly how it is supposed to be done.

But if the narrator didn't have such amazing writing to go from, none of what she does would be possible. And, let me tell you, Courtney Milan is a master at weaving tales of complicated woman, even more complicated men, and slow burn romances that take years to come to fruition. And I love her for it.

I've been waiting for Free's book since we were first introduced to her character many books ago, and it did not disappoint. She was an incredibly brave character, championing for women's rights when few other people were doing so. I loved her spunk, her disregard for society's rules, and the way she kept going, even when all odds were against her.

I loved Edward Clark even more. His story was heartbreaking, and I loved his character very deeply. I think that he wormed his way more and more into my heart over time, and I couldn't get enough of him.

And just when I thought that this book couldn't get any better, a F/F side story. Gah, introducing queer characters into a story is always a path to my good graces. I love that Courtney Milan went there.

If you are looking for strong, imperfect, interesting characters, look no further. If you want a narration that runs so seamlessly with the story that you forget that you are listening and instead you just FEEL the book, look no further. Courtney Milan does it again.

Huzzah! Suffragettes!

Rosalyn Landor reading Courtney Milan is one of my very favorite things, and this book did not disappoint. If you like your heroes and heroines to be genuinely intelligent; if you like your stories to be more than just a loose framework for a series of sex scenes; if you've ever thrown down a romance novel in disgust and wondered what that ninny of a heroine saw in that boorish, rapey thug of a hero, then you are exactly the audience for this book (and this whole series).

Ms. Milan crafts stories that boldly address social injustices without being preachy - on the contrary, her characters balance heartbreaking vulnerability, moral courage, and senses of humor in perfect proportion. Somehow, this book - which addresses themes of sexism, war, family discord, and torture - trips along on prose light as meringue and is often laugh-out-loud hilarious.

The heroine, Free, is everything you'd want the editor of a feminist newspaper to be - brash, confident, courageous, smart - but she's entirely relatable. Even if you think you're not a feminist, you'll still like her. The hero, Edward, is obviously perfect for her from the start, but there are still plenty of surprises along the way.

Complaints? The obstacle to the hero and heroine's ultimate happiness starts to wear a little thin by the end, and the primary villain is so thoroughly unsympathetic I found him a little unbelievable - but it didn't really matter. Courtney Milan now sets the bar for historical romance, as far as I'm concerned, and this book was awesome.

OK

Smooth dialog, almost no sex. Some of the themes in this series are starting to become redundant.

Sweet series

I love this series by Courtney Milan. This book deals with a subject not often covered by historical romance, that of the rights of women in England to vote. I love how she has such strong, smart women and sets them as pioneers in feminism and interlaces it with relevant historical events. If you like this series, check out the historical romances by Susan Wiggs, they have a similar feeling.

A Solid Romance with Little Spice

Where does The Suffragette Scandal rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would put it in the middle. It kept my attention and had a nice pace, but it lacked complexity.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked the kid brother. He was energetic and loyal.

Have you listened to any of Rosalyn Landor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I particularly enjoy Ms. Landor's performances and that is why I tried this new author. She had a great performance as always.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, that's why it belongs in the middle.

So I know I said the last book was my fav in the series...

...but this one may have moved up to #1? It's a challenge--I loved Violet and yet I SO love Free!!! Ever since we first met her in Heiress. Edward is wonderful as well--and I'm an absolute sucker for brother! Robert. The best part is that Free never backed down, not once, and her principles weren't smoothed over because of her love for Edward. The side story with Amanda and Genevieve was sweet too, but I think I wanted more if it was going to be in there. Beyond the story, Rosalyn Landor is the Queen of Narrators and the combination here is heaven!

Loved every moment - 10 stars!

Loved every letter (including punctuation!), word, phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph, page, chapter .... You get the idea! The characters were multidimensional and I fell in love with them all! I have been avidly reading this genre for 30 *cough* years and can honestly say this book has a place in my top 10!

The audio reading was magnificent and I really felt immersed in the story and the thoughts and emotions.

The Hero was someone I could not only fall in love with but have a true life happily ever after. I absolutely related to the Heroine who had the spunk and wit to take on her times. HUZZAH!!!!! I can't recommend this more !!!

I will definitely be listening again - I just wish I could go back in time and re listen fresh but alas! I will just have to glom all of Courtney Milans next series!!!
