Publisher's summary

The Art of War, The Prince, and The Book of Five Rings are three historical pieces that deal with strategy.

The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise, and each chapter within the treatise is devoted to a distinct aspect of warfare and how that applies to military strategy and tactics. The Art of War remains the most influential strategy text in East Asian warfare and has had a profound influence on East Asian and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy, and beyond.

Machiavelli composed The Prince as a practical guide for ruling an empire. Within his treatise, Machiavelli aims to provide strategies on how to govern a nation, conquest of new territories, and dealing with integration of the peoples of new territories. Machiavelli also lays out his strategy for defense, military, and the qualities a prince should have to govern properly.

The Book of Five Rings is a Japanese text that has been regarded as a treatise on the strategy for winning. The five chapters, "rings", refer to the idea that there are different elements of battle, just as there are different physical elements in life. The Book of Five Rings was known as the holy grail for samurai; it lays out strategy on how to defeat an enemy by using tactics such as throwing them off guard and creating confusion, among other techniques.

Great choice for spending your credit.

Getting all 3 books for 1 credit is definitely worth it. Kevin Collins does a great job narrating with a History Channel-worthy performance.

Fantastic collection!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I've wanted to read Musashi's Five Rings for a very long time, but I could never break into the text. This audiobook is my opportunity to delve into his story. I'm quite impressed by the clear, well-spoken narration and the excellent text so far.

The collection includes Sun Tzu's Art of War and Machiavelli's The Prince, which are true classics. Their quality speaks for itself, and the narration lends itself well to reading comprehension. Kollins has a clear, understandable cadence that I quite enjoy.

Timeless Classics

Each book is a classic and offers it's own wisdom. I have always wanted to read the books but could never get "into" them. However, listening to someone read them makes a difference. The narrator did an excellent job reading these books and read at a nice pace.

Three informative books in one

Three books throughout history that deal with strategy of fighting war, preventing war, and how to rule after the war is over. Even though they were written by people from vastly different cultures and time periods, they have some similarities in how they view winning a war, then the hearts and minds of those you conquer.

Please edit your narrations

Pronunciation is lacking here. These are great books. Narration seems like it wasn't reviewed prior to publishing.

Especially with great works like these, please review your narrators before publishing.

Timeless Works of Wisdom

I have all three books in printed editions because strategic thought is something that one must read one paragraph at a time and then contemplate its meaning and prospective applications. The Art of War is eternally valid because its guidelines are skeletal and flexible. The Prince is wonderfully timeless because its author tested and validated his theories with examples from the past, and his passages about whether it is better to be feared or loved, whether it better to be generous or a miser, and whether it is better to keep one's word or not are all too damn right. The Book of the Five Rings invokes some Buddhist and Confucian philosophy, and its author compares micro-level swordfighting to macro-level combat, but the book is the hardest of three to follow and feels more like a manual on swordfighting. Lastly, the narrator reads with sufficient spirit although his pronunciation of Italian and Japanese names was overly Americanized.

Narration could be better but the story solid

The narrator is very boring to listen to. He seemed to read too quickly and does not pause when pauses are needed.
