Publisher's summary

Read by Dave Grohl. Features excerpts from five never before heard demos performed by Dave Grohl and an original story exclusive to The Storyteller audiobook.

So, I've written a book.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I've recorded and can't wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.

This certainly doesn't mean that I'm quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it's like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall, bedtime stories with Joan Jett or a chance meeting with Little Richard, to flying halfway around the world for one epic night with my daughters...the list goes on. I look forward to focusing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement.

Editor's Pick

He’s got another confession to make…
Dave Grohl might just be one of the most likable rock stars to ever grace this Earth. The drummer for illustrious grunge trio Nirvana and the founder and frontman of 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee The Foo Fighters has managed to remain soulful, humble, warm, and good-natured despite his status as a bona fide musical icon. And that humor and heart are what make his new memoir, The Storyteller, a standout in the genre. Whether Grohl is recounting months on the road or noise-jams in the studio, the shattering loss of bandmate and dear friend Kurt Cobain, his brushes with rock stars ranging from Joan Jett to Sir Paul McCartney, or smaller, more intimate moments like time spent bonding with his daughters or memories of his mother’s encouragement and support, he voices every recollection with bright enthusiasm, raw honesty, and a driving sense of hope. —Alanna M., Audible Editor

Great guy, but he doesn’t finish stories…

I’m a big fan of Dave Grohl and I couldn’t wait to dive into this book. Many of the stories are unfinished. He builds you up with suspense in each chapter and then doesn’t finish the story, opting to change direction and talk about something different in the next. In the first half of the book he jumps around to different points of his life, without completing the previous story. If you have ever seen the movie “No Country for Old Men” you get a sense of how each chapter goes. Some people don’t mind being told a story, building suspense and ending in the middle of the story. I personally like to follow a story through to its conclusion. In one example, he talks about leaving LA to join Nirvana, building you up to that point, but says nothing about the actual first meeting. It leaves you hanging. In another example, he talks about leaving for LA, in Kurt’s Datsun B210, to record at Sound City, but then nothing. No talk about recording the album. No studio stories about creative choices. Nothing.
Other things too. Why did he move back to LA when he loved Virginia so much? Why did he choose to raise his family here instead of Virginia. What happened to his cousin who was a punk rocker? He talks about playing at Wriggly Field near where she lived, but never about how she felt about learning his stardom. There’s a lot of unanswered questions. It almost feels like an editor came along and cut a bunch out of stuff, and rearranged the chapters to give it less continuity. As someone who was genuinely interested in these stories and his life, I felt like this was incomplete with missing key points. He is still awesome, I just wish the book could have had more continuity and closure with many of the people and stories within.

No one inspires like Dave

Dave Grohl is a rock legend and truly is the best storyteller. He’s lived an amazing life and I loved hearing about it. His narration was SO GOOD! 10+ hours may seem like a long time to listen to one person talk about their life but the minutes flew by and I found myself wishing there were more chapters. So glad Dave shared his incredible stories. Loved them and love him.

I. love. him.

I pre-ordered because I've always been a fan of his goofiness and music and I was curious about his time with Nirvana. But, as I listened I started to feel like we could really be friends and now I'm trying to figure out a way to manifest him in my circle.... hey, stranger things have happened 🤷🏾‍♀️. Anyway, I loved this book and I hope he does more.

THERE IS ANOTHER STORY AFTER THE ENDING CREDITS MUSIC!!!!

The Best 10.35 Hours

I had preordered the hardcover book in April 2021 patiently waiting for October 3rd release date. Audible hit first and couldn’t wait two days for the Amazon truck. No buyer’s remorse here…THE best 10.35 hours I have ever experienced reading along with Audible. I have cried, I have laughed, and have gained more admiration for a man who I had thought I had already held to a highest regard. Thank you Dave Grohl.

Literally the best thing to happen in 2021!

Is it weird that I bought the actual hardcover to follow along with WHILE I listen to the nicest guy in rock read to me for 10.5 hours?! 🤣

I have a major jones for this man. Everything Dave Grohl touches turns to gold. I have been waiting for this for so long, I cannot believe it's finally here. He is the consummate rock star of my generation. His stories are epic. His F bombs are plentiful. His amazing attitude and his ability to be humble while he's got this great life (for which he undoubtedly worked so hard) is so inspiring. He's one of those famous people who, when you think about it, really does deserve all his success. I'm so happy I finally have a DG book written by the man himself. It will no doubt be beloved by all those who rock. 🤘

good start but...

Early on I loved this book. I'm a fan for sure. The stories of Dave chasing his dreams and learning g his craft are great. But there were a few 'trying to hard' moments where the wit turned to cheese. Also, I struggled to finish the book because I felt much of the later part of this book was a ton of name dropping. Dave emphasizes a lot how humble he is; all the while discussing story after of story of hanging out with Paul McCartney, performing at the white house, and getting Grammy invites. Initially I was intrigued with his A list star encounters, by the end was rolling my proverbial eyes wanting more substance and loss gloss.

obviously

this reviews section is a circlejerk for dave grohl but I expected nothing less. he's insightful, funny, and humble. the kind of guy who really does deserve all the fanfare that comes with being a rockstar, as another reviewer pointed out. it's in your interest to listen beyond the credits - he throws an encore story in at the end. I tend to listen to books 8-12 hours of the day and i took my time on this one - did 2 or 3 hours over a few days - just to make it last as long as possible. he had some takeaways buried in the stories that any artist would benefit from hearing. he's a cool nerd - the kind of nerd who draws you in with his zeal for his passions. enjoy the rabbit hole of youtube videos this book will inevitably lead you to....if you weren't into dave grohl before, you will be now. also, violet really can sing.!!

It's Dave Grohl...what more could you want?

Beautifully written, entertaining, mesmerizing. A roller-coaster ride of humor, joy, and heartbreak that I never wanted to end. Dave Grohl is not only a rock icon, but a true storyteller.

absolutely loved it

Everything about it deserves a chef's kiss.
It really reminded me of Mitch Albom's "The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto" in the sense that the spirit of music had a busy hand in Grohl's life.
