E.M. Forster
E.M. Forster was an English novelist, short-story writer, and essayist who specialized in stories that examined and deconstructed socioeconomic class systems and societal and religious hypocrisy. "The Story of the Siren", taken from Forster’s short-story collection The Eternal Moment and Other Stories, first published in 1928, is a short story heavy with metaphor and symbolism.
It centers around two people, a couple, who have both seen a siren deep in the sea. The couple are to be wed and bear a child who will reveal the siren to the world and thus save it. However, a priest plots to quash this prophecy in a dark and shocking way.
"The Story of the Siren" is a fascinating, expertly crafted, and thought-provoking piece of surreal fiction and is an extremely underrated Forster short story.
