Publisher's summary

Based on actual events, The Story of My Assassins tells the story of a journalist who learns that the police have captured five hitmen on their way to kill him. Landing like a bombshell on his comfortable life, just as he’s started a steamy affair with a brilliant woman, the news prompts him to launch an urgent investigation into the lives of his aspiring murderers - a ragtag group of street thugs and village waifs - and their mastermind. Who wanted him dead, and why?

a glimpse of India's traumatic history

how do people cope with poverty and violence? this book is a journey of intensity, each assassin's story gives the reader an understanding of how the politics of independence tore at the heart of the nation and traumatized it's people, and in spite of this each character finds his equilibrium and humanity. Funny and uplifting, I enjoyed this book for it's heart-warming ending!

Sex and skullduggery in India

Would you consider the audio edition of The Story of My Assassins to be better than the print version?

This is a fascinating and explicit novel of the crime and corruption of modern day India. The conceit is an investigating reporter on whom there is an alledged assassination plot. The reporter narrates his own story after which we get biographical stories of the lives of the five assassins---in which a tumultous picture of modern India is painted. The writing is excellent, the characters all well drawn and interesting, and the narration is beautifully done, never monotonous, with different voices used to great effect in direct dialogue. From corruption at the top levels down to street kids sleeping in railway stations, all of India in its spendid corruption is here. Just a caution, the writing and the story is at times ribald (but never gratuitously so). This author has a wonderful way with words, I don't think I'll ever peel and eat a cucumber again without thinking of the book. Highly recommended.
