Meet Shaman Bond, aka Eddie Drood, scion of the ancient Drood family. He is devoted to protecting humanity from the forces of darkness. Protected by the secret weapon received at birth by all members of the Drood family - a magical gold torc (i.e., a neck ring) that turns into a suit of nearly impervious golden armor - Eddie faces arcane dangers with healthy doses of wry self-confidence and sarcasm. Then the family matriarch sends him on a mission that turns out to be a deadly setup.

The Droods are all about control, making people do what they're told for the greater good. The Nightside is all about choice: good and bad and everything in between. The Droods want to make the world behave. The Nightside wants to party. They were never going to get along. For centuries, ancient Pacts have kept the Droods out of the Nightside, but now the Droods see the Nightside as a threat to the whole world. They march into the long night, in their armour, to put it under their control. All too soon, the two sides are at war.

"The name's John Taylor. I'm a PI for hire in the Nightside, the dark and corrupt city within the city of London. Where the sun never shines and where pleasure and horror are always on sale - for the right price. Not a nice place to visit or a nice place to live. So you wouldn't think I would care that it was about to be destroyed, but none other than my very own long-missing, not-quite-human mind. But I do. "Only in that dark heart of London where it's always three a.m., where human and inhuman can feed their darkest desires, do I feel at home. Probably because I was born here. What I do is find things - people, objects - and in this case, the truth about the origins of the Nightside. That's what Lady Luck has hired me to investigate. But the more I dig, the more I discover, not about the Nightside but about the great question in my life: exactly who - and what - was my long-vanished mother."

Several improvements in this book.
I have to say all the books in this series have been pretty good. I like this one best so far. That is because the author finally settles in to tell the story and tones down the constant braggadocio about the droods. That was the only real complaint I had with the series and now that it is better this was a pleasure to read.
The narrarator changed, but I like him better anyway. Mr. Langdon has a better range than the previous person and the voices are not quite so cartoony. So, two thumbs up for this one. If you liked the other books in the series you will definitely enjoy this one as well.

Audiobook series are driven by narration!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would have stayed with Stuart Blinder as narrator. I didn't care for himat first but he grew on me after a couple of books. I am sure Mr. Langdon is a competent narrator, but his voice changed the character of the book series in an unforgivable way.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of James Langdon?
Stuart Blindor or Marc Vietor
Was The Spy Who Haunted Me worth the listening time?
Not particularly.
Any additional comments?
I see that there is yet another narrator change for the next book. I hope his take on the characters is better.

Who wouldn't like Eddie but Walker was on the money also
What about James Langdon’s performance did you like?
True when they change readers you never know, but Mr Langdon did a great job.We Look forward to listening to him again
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Sorry we are truck drivers and listen on the road. Time won't let us do one long listen. As soon as we can we get back to the story

We are looking forward to the next one. Dennis

nightside meets the secret
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes the voices are so exciting and brings the characters to life.
What other book might you compare The Spy Who Haunted Me to and why?
I cant compare it to any other book. The series is a one of a kind.
What about James Langdon???s performance did you like?
Loved it. He throws himself into the story
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I would not want to make it into a movie. Movies are great but imagination is better.
Any additional comments?
He should narrate all the Simon green syfy series.

Secret histories gaiden
The whole story is entertaining but given that there are very limited stakes the whole book feels like a side story. Most characters from earlier novels are missing while we have some more cross book series cameos in return which is a little disappointing. The biggest downside is the overall structure around 5 mysteries, each of which would be a fine short story, but the binding glue is weak with an unsatisfactory villain (in reality the villain of the last mystery feels more dangerous) and various inconsistencies, leaving a lot of open questions. Despite all the complaining the book was very well read as usual and overall enjoyable. Not greens best, and in particular a further step down from the previous making me worry about the trend, but fast pace and perfect for background listening.
