Publisher's Summary

Intrepid baker and erstwhile investigator Corinna Chapman returns triumphantly in her first adventure in seven years.

Corinna Chapman, baker extraordinaire, talented sleuth, stalwart friend and lover is back!

When a distraught Scottish veteran from Afghanistan is knocked unconscious, waking up to find his beloved ex-service dog missing, Corinna and her lover, Daniel, find themselves inextricably drawn into the machinations of a notorious underworld gang of drug runners.

Corinna and Daniel need to pull together all the strings to find the connections between their wandering Scottish veteran, his kidnapped dog, a student dramatic society that's moved into Corinna's building, burglaries and the threatening notes that begin to mysteriously appear in Corinna's apartment.

Between her forays into danger, there is still time in Corinna's life for tender encounters as the delicious aromas of newly baked breads, muffins and treats waft out of Corinna's bakery, Earthly Delights.

great story but

the narrator was a disappointment, she made Corinna shrewish and hard rather than the warm generous but weary soul she is . she also read it like she was in a race which meant I kept losing my place and had to go back to pick up details missed in her rush to finish.

What happened?

I love this author & have been a long time fan of this series - I did not even check to see if the narrator had changed I was so happy to see the new addition to the series. The new Narrator (who I'm sure must have done other super narrations) has ruined this series * Names are being mispronounced including Corrina's *Accents are thicker and not as melodic *When did Goss become a kiwi? It all left me very confused and now much more vigilant with what I spend my credits on.

Why the reader change?

I love the Corrina Chapman books and own all the Audible versions. When I saw this I was tickled pink at a new one and bought it without looking at the performer. Big mistake. To my mind this performer gave no life or feelings to any of the characters I love. She made Corinna into an unlikeable, rather shrewish, person and Daniel into a bit of a thug. The other characters didn’t fair as badly but not well either. I made myself listen to the whole thing. I hoped that my initial disappointment would change as I got used to the new voice. I finished as disappointed as when I started. The story might be good or even terrific but I couldn’t get past the new voices of the characters I love. Why do writers feel the need to change performers? If Louise Siversen has died, I morn her loss and see why a replacement was necessary. However, I don’t foresee buying another Corinna Chapman audio book with the current performer.

Oh dear!

Liked the story. However, as a lot of us know, the narrator makes a huge impact on the story and the characters. Did not like this narrator at all. Made a big difference in how you saw the characters compared to the previous books. Daniel did not sound sexy, Karina sounded mediocre and uninteresting And the rest of the characters were not themselves. If the same narrator on the next book probably would not buy the Audible. Would read the book myself.

Insula from another dimension?

The setting is the same, the names are the same but these are different people from the ones I loved in the first six books. Corina is a condescending, humorless woman, the other people have also changed and not for the better. There is an abundance of the author’s views on politics, religion and society. Shakespeare is great but is used so much that it just feels like filler. Couldn’t finish. The narrator tries but adds so much to the feeling that this is a book from an entirely different series. So very disappointing.

Oh dear.

All settled back for another Corinna and what did I hear? Oh, no. A different reader and one not at all like the previous one. I’m sure if I heard this reader read a different book, or if I hadn’t been so invested in the rest of the series I would have not been so shocked. It is especially noticeable if you do as i do and listen to them in series. I can’t I just can’t. It’s not just the different characterisations that get me, I could have adapted to that but it is also the pace. Too fast for me to listen to at normal speed and too slow at .75. I’m sure many will love this but even after multiple listening and aborted attempts I’ll just have to let this one moulder in the archives of my collection.😢

Corinna #7 ok by me

I love Corinna and her tales to date so was delighted when my sister texted news about this one. I was a bit thoughtful over a couple of negative review points but dived in anyway. At first I too found the new voice all 'wrong' but an hour or two in I hardly noticed and by the end I was perfectly content with Jennifer's performance. particularly her Corinna; while other characters balanced out some being much better others rather the opposite. I enjoyed the characters, setting and cats as usual and found the plot pretty much in Kerry's usual Corinna style, a bit over the top but well woven into the Australian setting. I really like her presentation of social issues and poking at community standards/ norms. I came out of my listening feeling good and satisfied with this book.

Good story - badly read

What a shame. The story is good but the narration is very poor. Characterisation is grotesque.

Why did they change the narrator?

As you would expect from Kerry Greenwood, this long awaited installment of Corinna Chapman's adventures is excellent. We drop into her world as though we never left and the adventures that are contained within these 'covers' are completely satisfying. I won't go into the actual story as I don't want to spoil it but if you give it a go, you will love it. If you love the other books, you will love this one and all I would say is I really hope we don't have to wait so long for the next one. I have one gripe, the narrator and to be fair I don't think she did a bad job, Jennifer Vuletic did a good job, BUT I hate having the narrator swapped, particularly when all the other books are read by one other person. I have a bit of a problem with some of her character interpretations and some of the ways she pronounces names but on the whole it was read well. If you came to this story first I am sure you would be absolutely fine but I have listened to all the other books many, MANY times and I like the performance of Louise Siversen so this sounded a bit too shrill and harsh in places. Again, this version is actually a good version but it would have been so much better if they had used Louise again. Please BOLINDA/AMAZON/AUDIBLE, stop messing around with series narrators when they are doing an excellent job. If we can have a version read by Louise I will happily buy that version as well.

Great story... but....

Kerry Greenwood is a wonderful and creative person, her stories transport you there. Sadly, this narrator did not do this story any justice at all. She sounded like she was doing a time trial and each chapter had to finished quicker than the previous one. She made Corinna sound like a screeching shrew! As for the rest of characters they to were a disappointment. Not the most pleasurable stories to listen too

Another great story in the Corrina Chapman series

I'm enamoured of Kerry Greenwood's writing style and characters. This series has a lot of appeal for me, and this book holds its own well as part of the series. While i always find a change of narrator part-way through a series of audiobooks to be a jarring experience, the transition here has been as smooth as possible and, if a change of narrator was unavoidable, then Jennifer Vuletic was an extremely good choice. I've not heard her narration before but she's going on my list of very listenable narrators. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable story with a great narrator. I'd recommend this one.

Not as good as the previous books.

The story is a bit slow and plodding. I also can't say I'm a fan of the new narrator. She's okay but I prefer the original narrator for this series. It is also a little jarring to suddenly hear a new voice narrating characters you are used hearing a certain way. Not sure if I actually liked this book to be honest.

enjoyed story but...….

A long awaited story in this series which I enjoyed HOWEVER it was spoiled somewhat by the narrator who, although competently done, was just not Corrina for me. At first I thought that Louise Siverson (the real Corrina) had passed away as has Stephanie Daniel who was a great Phryne but, not so, as I have checked. What were Bolinda thinking of? Still, it was great to have a new book by Kerry Greenwood and, no doubt, I will get used to the new narrator.

So Disappointing :-(

I had so looked forward to this book, having really enjoyed the earlier books in the series, but I just couldn’t get into this one. The storyline is so weak with such improbable events that I kept turning it off in frustration. It was only the memory of the quirky rollicking yarns that I had enjoyed in the earlier books that made me keep trying. Although all my favourite characters were still loveable, they didn’t grow in any way and the new ones seemed like cardboard cut-outs with no personality at all. And it is all painted over with so many words that any substance there might be in the story just drowns in the detail. I’m sorry Kerry. I guess you are entitled to have one dud in such a good series, but please give Corinne a story she deserves next time!

narrator ruins this ...

anyone who loves these series has come to expect the voices, and characters to be a certain way, while i understand things change, the narrator didn't even attempt to continue on, on the previous 6 books characters now have completely different accents (from Australian to new Zealand in two characters cases) and pronounces many characters names totally wrong. such a let down on an otherwise great story
