Publisher's Summary

Halloween in North Carolina's Outer Banks becomes seriously tricky when librarian Lucy Richardson stumbles across something extra unusual in the rare books section: a dead body.

Wealthy businessman Jay Ruddle is considering donating his extensive collection of North Carolina historical documents to the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, but the competition for the collection is fierce. Unfortunately, while the library is hosting a lecture on ghostly legends, Jay becomes one of the dearly departed in the rare books section. Now, it's up to Lucy Richardson and her fellow librarians to bone up on their detective skills and discover who is responsible for this wicked Halloween homicide.

Meanwhile, very strange things are happening at the library - haunted horses are materializing in the marsh, the lights seem to have an eerie life of their own, and the tiny crew of a model ship appears to move around when no one is watching. Is Lucy at her wit's end? Or can it be that the Bodie Island Lighthouse really is haunted?

With The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on everyone's minds and ghoulish gossip on everyone's lips, Lucy will need to separate the clues from the boos if she wants to crack this case without losing her head in The Spook in the Stacks, the delightful fourth in national best-seller Eva Gates' Lighthouse Library mysteries.

Great Start Then It Slowed Down

I had not read prior published work by Eva Gates so that I don't know if this book is the way she usually writes. There were some aspects of this story that made me wonder why she even used them, for example, the horse on the moor. Why even bring that in if you just let it remain unaddressed in the story? I may be a bit spoiled in my likes and dislikes but I really get annoyed by story elements that appear and are left to take away in my expectations for closure. I will read the first book to see if this is something she frequently does at which point I will be able to see if she is to remain on my favorite list.

please get a different narrator

the story was great. It could use a bit of editing to tighten it up and get rid of some of the repetition. For example, how many times did we need to be informed Lucy was from Boston? My biggest issue is the narrator had no clue how to to do a NC accent let alone what one from the OBX sounds like and yes there are differences; just as not all southerns sound the same.

Annunciation is very important to me. Locals know that Bodie Island / Bodie island lighthouse is not BODY.

This was my very first book by author and narrator. I’m not sure I enjoyed either, I couldn’t tell the differences between characters voices so I was confused often to who was speaking and the OBX accent is a very unique one and hard to mimic. It was not capture here at all. Even the English accent was something not quite caught by the narrator. I’m not sure I want to hear this narrator again, not sure I want to follow the series, this is all before chapter one. I couldn’t make it through the full first chapter. I don’t want to dissuade anyone from listening it just wasn’t for me.

this was a good fun book.

I enjoyed reading this book because it was just a fun read. Not serious or heavy, kind of cute I enjoyed it. I have to say though sometimes when a woman does the male voices in this case Theodore oh, it doesn't come across that well. I cringed every time Theodore spoke but I enjoyed it. Merry Christmas to all of you and I look forward to my next audible book

Narration kills it

Wow, this was a slog to get through. I had to skip to the end. I’m from the South, where the story takes place, and these accents- like others have said- just aren’t accurate. It was really tough to listen to. I wouldn’t recommend.

Spook in the Stacks

I expected a silly little read, but it was actually quite fun! If you’ve been to the Outer Banks, you will probably enjoy it. A fluffy little mystery/romance took the nerves off of Election Day!

A little disappointing

I generally enjoy cozy mysteries and especially this author but this story was a little boring to me.

Great series brought back .

So Glad Eva Gates was able to get a new publisher for the series. The characters are brought to life well and the setting is lovely. It was and now is cozy story I enjoy listening.

Disappointed

I was a bit disappointed in this book, The characters were a bit predictable and the story was a bit formulaic. I skipped ahead a few times because some of the actions and behaviors of the characters were annoying. Teddy's character and behavior was ridiculous. I'll probably get the next book because I hope that it's better than this one.

spook in the stacks. misleading

either I missed it -- falling asleep and kept repeating, I heard about the mysterious horse, but it wasn't the main purpose of the storyline.
