Publisher's Summary

For 10 exciting years, the Spider battled the underworld, imprinting his scarlet seal on the bodies of the criminals he slew. None knew his name. His face was unknown. Pursued by the police, sought by the mob, the Master of Men crushed crime with a blazing ferocity never witnessed before or since.

Manhattan is under siege from a new brand of terrorist - a human monster who calls himself the Black Death. His weapon a choice: virulent strains of Bubonic plague that strikes down its victims within hours. Unless the city fathers pay up, New York will become a charnel house of horrors. Can the Spider defeat this menace - or will death's black wings smother him too?

The Spider - as we've come to know him is born

In this, the third Spider novel we finally start to see the character of the Spider as we will eventually get to know him. For the first time, he dons the trademark mask. He takes on a super villain in the form of a evil genius going by the name of The Black Death. He takes on a threat too large for the police in an extortion plot against nothing less than all of New York City. Dancing on the fine line between being killed by the villians and being hunted down by the police, this is his greatest challenge to date.

If you are a fan of pulp adventure, this is a great place to start. One very clever man against insurmountable odds. No Shadow like mystical powers. No Doc Savage like super science.

I enjoyed this volume much more than the previous volumes, as now we are moving into that stylized pulp world and away from the much simpler generic gangsters and blackmailers.
