Publisher's summary

Co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post Arianna Huffington shows how our cultural dismissal of sleep as time wasted compromises our health and our decision-making and undermines our work lives, our personal lives--and even our sex lives in this New York Times bestseller.

We are in the midst of a sleep deprivation crisis, with profound consequences to our health, our job performance, our relationships and our happiness. What we need is nothing short of a sleep revolution: only by renewing our relationship with sleep can we take back control of our lives.

In The Sleep Revolution, Arianna explores all the latest science on what exactly is going on while we sleep and dream. She takes on the sleeping pill industry, and all the ways our addiction to technology disrupts our sleep. She also offers a range of recommendations and tips from leading scientists on how we can get better and more restorative sleep, and harness its incredible power.

The result is a sweeping, scientifically rigorous, and deeply personal exploration of sleep from all angles, from the history of sleep, to the role of dreams in our lives, to the consequences of sleep deprivation, and the new golden age of sleep science that reveals the vital role sleep plays in our every waking moment and every aspect of our health--from weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease to cancer and Alzheimer’s.

In today's fast-paced, always-connected, perpetually-harried and sleep-deprived world, our need for a good night’s sleep is more important--and elusive--than ever. The Sleep Revolution both sounds the alarm on our worldwide sleep crisis and provides a detailed road map to the great sleep awakening that can help transform our lives, our communities, and our world.

narrator is her sister

having her sister narrate gives it a personal voice closer to the authors. more habit and psychology than science

Too long for a scientific subject.

Loved it beside it's length. More like a Novel rather than a scientific book. Great references.

Too repetitive

The author spends 90% of the book justifying why sleep is important, a and only the remaining 10% on what to do about it.

Tremendously important topic

I struggled to understand some important words and app names due to the speakers accent. Clearly Ms Huffington is deeply concerned and committed to our national sleep deficit issue and the myriad of devastating health and personal devastation it can cause e.g., drowsy pilots, truck drivers, and health personnel. Early heart attacks and strokes for the general public etc. A good listen.

Too Many Statistics

It was interesting, but there were too many statistics throughout the story, which took away from the flow.
If Arianna Huffington wasn’t going to read her book, it would have been better, in my opinion, to have an English-speaking person read it.

Viva La Revolution!

Loved it so much I have read it twice. I have made it my book to read for the month in my Book Club. Sleep IS SO IMPORTANT! The way it is written fact based, science backed, not to mention the history offered about sleep throughout time, amazing. Sleep valuable in all realms from sports, school, business, health, development, including diet! As a Mother and Night Shift Charge RN I give thanks for the acknowledgment of what we give up on a regular, sleep;how a Patient in the Hospital does not get rest. Arianna gives proof how poor sleep cannot be made up for and does so with FACTS. All the information is given in such a flow as though I am talking with a passionate friend. The narrorator speaks clearly and eloquently as if she were Arianna herself. I will be listening to this again and is for sure now one of my favorites.

Good content poorly delivered

Would you try another book from Arianna Huffington and/or Agapi Stassinopoulos?

Arianna Huffington probably but Agapi Stassinoplolous no.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

Hard to tell based upon the delivery

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Completely! It may be a combination of the writer or editor but is more than like a poor reader and/or conductor. The second language provides an out of sync/not a smooth flowing story and it's difficult to follow the performance in what is a quote at the beginning of a chapter and what is the authors work. Do all the chapters start with a quote? Hard to tell from the performance. Is the correct emphasis placed in the sentence? Not really. It's almost like listening to a child recite their first books.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No.

Any additional comments?

Would like to have it read by a different performer and a free update. Will see if I can return it.

Enjoyable

First, I found the comments about the narrator to be, well, unfounded. Perhaps folks aren't used to accents (even Arianna has one)? I found Agapi's narration clear and engaging--especially compared to some of the narrators who seem robotic. If you are comfortable with accents other than American, don't let the critics of this narrator discourage you.

Second, I've followed interviews with Arianna as she spoke about this book. The information wasn't really new, but definitely worth reading. I've given a few paperback copies to friends as gifts.
