The mission: Put on a dress, pretend to be a lady, and infiltrate the academy of mages to steal a journal from the forbidden archives. The problem: I’m no mage and I’ve never worn a dress in my life. But it’s not like I have a choice. My bastard of an uncle basically sold me to a dangerously pretty nobleman, and they can’t pull off this heist without me. Unfortunately, once I fake my way through the entrance exam with a piece of hacked mage tech, and reach the floating kingdom of Reverie, my problems are only just beginning.

It had been almost a century and a half since I last encountered anyone from the Order of the Morning Dawn. They were religious fundamentalists with the dual goal of eliminating vampires and witches. Being both a vampire and a witch, I was the embodiment of everything the Order hates. Their first attempt to eliminate me failed. Publisher's Summary
Perfect for fans of Frewin Jones' The Faerie Path and Aprilynne Pike's Wings series!
Have you ever learned a secret about yourself that could change your life forever?
When a mysterious and handsome boy showed up at my high school, all the girls wanted his attention. But who did he approach? Plain, less-than-ordinary me!
Words like changeling and dreamseer made my head spin as Declan, who claims to be my protector, tried to convince me that I’m actually a creature from the faerie realm, switched at birth with a human infant who is the true child of my parents.
Should I follow Declan's lead to discover the truth? How can I not?

A Truly Enjoyable Series
This series is about the hidden depths in all of us and about choosing love.
I like Hope. I found her plight believable. Many times those that are bullied can’t easily find that help that they crave. (Bureaucracy is often the unseen big bad in this fight.)
Hope’s gentle spirit and her openness are what make her impressive. She is not looking for a knight in shining armor, but she doesn’t let others set her sense of self worth. She isn’t self-sabotaging.
This series starter didn’t get into the idea of faeries as much as I would have liked, but it did have my mind spinning possibilities for Hope.
As I write this review, I should note that I have already finished the whole series; and I got a review copy of the audiobook. Kashner did an excellent job of narrating this story. A great narrator can make a good book great. I felt that this book was great though it did cross my mind that I could tell that Lavenza had grown as an author between this series and the Heir of Prophecy series.

a little slow
I liked the idea of the story, even though I have read several books about a girl who is a loner at school and then all of a sudden a hot boy takes her away and tells her she is beautiful and important and not human. The thing is, most of the book takes place at high school where they met and I thought it took way too long to answer what was going on. The book doesn't answer most of the questions about what is happening and that was frustrating. The narrator did a good job and it was enjoyable to listen to while I was cleaning the house, I just think this whole book needed to move along in the storyline faster. I will keep listening to the series so I hope the next book moves a little faster and my questions are answered.
