Publisher's Summary

A young man sets out on his first voyage as captain, aboard a vessel and among a crew that are equally unfamiliar to him. A mysterious night-swimmer climbs aboard, and, in keeping the presence of this fugitive a secret, the skipper risks both his captaincy and the safety of his ship. A test of nerve in the Gulf of Siam ensues.

A very odd story

I'm glad this story was short because the computer-generated narration would have become very annoying if it had gone on for very much longer.

The story itself is satisfyingly dark and mysterious. As a one-time offshore sailing man, I felt almost as if I was a third secret sharer - the tension of the last phase of the story was almost palpable.

ps - a few weeks after writing my review, I visited the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, London. Interestingly, it appears that The Secret Sharer is based on a series of events which took place on one of Cutty Sark's voyages. In 'reality' the ship's master took his own life because he knew that his actions had rendered him no longer employable.
