Classic Bryson, short but sweet

Nice little holiday treat. Thanks, Audible. This delivered all the little historical tidbits I’ve come to enjoy in Bill Bryson’s books. There’s a touch of dry humor as well. Bryson’s voice is sounding a tad frail in places, and a few words were hard to catch, but I enjoyed the performance. (And to be fair, my own hearing is a tad frail in places.)

Bill’s books are such a good listen/read every time. Interesting to learn so many facets of Christmas.

Bill Bryson is my favorite author for weaving a humorous and entertaining narrative while still providing depth of learning and objectivity. I could literally listen and read about anything he wishes to discuss...and I do! I know more about Christmas than I'll ever need!

I have read all his books, and it is so exciting to see this pop up (I thought he had retired) and to hear his reassuring voice too! Always interesting, and I had a good laugh at his dry humour. Fa-la-la!

A delightful history of Christmas

I really enjoyed listening to details about Christmas that were new to me or reminded me of old stories. The many details and effort in fact- finding were greatly appreciated. The author/narrator’s voice was delightful. Thank you for helping me get in the holiday mood!

Excellent historical look at Christmas traditions

Oh my! This audio was a true delight! “The Secret History of Christmas” narrated and authored by Bill Bryson is a freebee from Amazon Audible that is 3 hours of joy.

Ever wonder who invented the Christmas Card? How did mistletoe become part of Christmas? How did December 25th become the decided birth of our Lord? Boxing Day? What the heck is that? And Christmas carols, who started the tradition? What sort of fowl is favored by different countries at the “Christmas” season? Ever wonder what the folks in Japan eat to recognize a Christian Holiday?

This is the perfect listen to get you in the holiday spirit. It’s fun, entertaining, and incredibly informative. I was astounded by my lack of curiosity surrounding the traditions of Christmas.

I highly recommend this, especially for the month of December. I am going to make it a new tradition for me to listen to this audio every December!
