Publisher's summary

A definitive account of World War II by America's preeminent military historian.

World War II was the most lethal conflict in human history. Never before had a war been fought on so many diverse landscapes and in so many different ways, from rocket attacks in London to jungle fighting in Burma to armor strikes in Libya.

The Second World Wars examines how combat unfolded in the air, at sea, and on land to show how distinct conflicts among disparate combatants coalesced into one interconnected global war. Drawing on 3,000 years of military history, Victor Davis Hanson argues that despite its novel industrial barbarity, neither the war's origins nor its geography were unusual. Nor was its ultimate outcome surprising. The Axis powers were well prepared to win limited border conflicts, but once they blundered into global war, they had no hope of victory.

An authoritative new history of astonishing breadth, The Second World Wars, offers a stunning reinterpretation of history's deadliest conflict.

"History is written by the victor" epitomized

This is an excellent book for a numerical and statistical reference.
Though, as an account of real men under real conditions: it is lacking. An almost identical action, if taken by an axis power, is ridiculed while an allied action would be applauded. For example; daring and bold action of allied commanders would be construed as reckless if taken by an axis commander. Even as an American, the American bias in this book is so heavy it cannot be ignored while listening.

Great book.

Content exceptional explanation of the second world war. Hanson at his best. Narration simply awfully. Narrator rushed the read. He showed no respect for the content. Sometimes his pronunciation of words was off. Did no one check his performance?

Tremendous insight into lesser known facts of ww2

Very well paced. An easy read, yet packed with information and statistics. VDH draws on his super classical education to put the various stats and figures of the second world War

Excellent Understanding of World War 2

I have a great interest in world history, particularly the World war II era. I found this book to be exceptional in the way that it explained what happened in World war II. This is a careful analysis of the roles of all of the parties the belligerence and the victors. If you want to increase your understanding of what happened you can't miss with this book.

Best overview of WWII

The presentation is long and well thought out as Victor Davis Hanson always does. Breaking the war into distinct elements provides an informative overview of that horrific event. Additionally, his objectivity provides an even handed account of the war.
