The fog of war shrouds occupied Denmark in the darkest days of World War II. On a farm in Jutland, Fredrik Gregersen struggles to keep his children fed, supplementing his income by smuggling refugees through Denmark into Sweden. Meanwhile, in Copenhagen, Polina, a young Polish Jew, has been forced into prostitution by the Nazis. When Fredrik steals an heirloom necklace from a helpless Jewish family, his fate becomes intertwined with Polina's, entrapping them both in a complex web that takes decades to unravel.

Heartbreaking, riveting, and devastating

The first chapter grabs you and never lets go. This is a war story, but it's more than that. It's the story of a family, of a father trying to protect his family from monsters--and finding that he's become a monster himself--of a sensitive son trying to become his own man. The ending left me ugly-crying on a plane, to the point where I terrified a flight attendant. The images, and the emotions of this book, never leave you. But I'm not doing it justice. Please listen for yourself, and see how quickly you are transported into this world. And how impossible it is to leave.

couldn’t stop listening

Brilliant audio book. Thrilling and deeply moving at the same time. Listened to it each night in bed before going to sleep. Would turn on the timer for an hour, then usually ended up switching it on again for one more when the hour was up. I love this book. I have also read it (more than once, actually :) but to listen to it is like reading it for the first time. Again. It’s an entirely different and intense experience. Mark Bramhall’s reading is extraordinary. He needs a part in the film when this book gets turned into a movie!

I can’t recommend this audio book highly enough.
