Publisher's summary

American Indian Youth Literature Award: Middle Grade Honor Book! In this evocative and heartwarming novel for listeners who loved The Thing About Jellyfish, the author of I Can Make This Promise tells the story of a Native American girl struggling to find her joy again.

It’s been a hard year for Maisie Cannon, ever since she hurt her leg and could not keep up with her ballet training and auditions.

Her blended family is loving and supportive, but Maisie knows that they just can’t understand how hopeless she feels. With everything she’s dealing with, Maisie is not excited for their family midwinter road trip along the coast, near the Makah community where her mother grew up.

But soon, Maisie’s anxieties and dark moods start to hurt as much as the pain in her knee. How can she keep pretending to be strong when on the inside she feels as roiling and cold as the ocean?

The Heartdrum imprint centers a wide range of intertribal voices, visions, and stories while welcoming all young listeners, with an emphasis on the present and future of Indian Country and on the strength of young Native heroes. In partnership with We Need Diverse Books.

sneaks up on you

I wasn't in love at first, but it really sunk in and was a good book. so many middle schoolers work to define themselves, often by the sport they partake in. This is about what happens when the ability to compete is taken away & learning to be ok with the loss.

It’s great!

This book is great! Great book for middle grade girls. The only thing is i think that girls should grow up strong, and at least put up some kind of a fight when something is hard for them and i feel that maise kind of gives up without a fight at the end of the book.

Heartwarming, soft, real

The Sea in Winter tells the story of a young girl named Maisie who is struggling. She loves ballet, but she had to stop dancing after she tore her ACL. More than that, though, it tells the story of an amazing and resilient family filled with love despite being in pain. I loved the family dynamics in this book SO much. The dad, Jack, is brilliant. Maisie’s little brother is adorable and hilarious. And Maisie’s mom is great, too. I love how the parents work hard to help their kids have a better life than they had, and how they work hard to teach their kids about their cultures and ancestors. The audiobook narration is great. It was really soothing, honestly.
