Publisher's Summary

The novel begins when Van Weyden is swept overboard into San Francisco Bay, and plucked from the sea by Larsen's seal-hunting vessel, the Ghost. This ship's evil captain, Wolf Larsen - The Sea-Wolf - is a murderous tyrant who uses his superhuman strength to torture and destroy, his brilliant mind to invent sick games, and his relentless will to control his mutinous crew. Pressed into service as a cabin boy by the ruthless captain, Van Weyden becomes an unwilling participant in a brutal shipboard drama. Larsen's increasingly violent abuse of the crew fuels a mounting tension that ultimately boils into mutiny, shipwreck, and a desperate confrontation.

Great story but...

I enjoyed the unexpected development of both Humphrey and Wolf Larsons characters. In unexpected ways London brings each across an initial spectral stereotype until each is seen opposite of where the reader believes them to be.
I believe young and advanced in years could glean some thoughts to sharpen and perhaps strengthen themselves.
I enjoyed most of Josh Smiths narrated characters but felt Wolf Larsons voice to be quite unlike the powerful character he was portrayed to be by London. He should have been a booming , larger than life robust rogue but came across as pinched and distant.
All said the book and themes presented were well worth the time taken to listen.
Enjoyed immensely.

BEWARE OF SILIBANCE ON THIS RECORDING!!!

I've listened to and enjoyed many Jack London recorded books from Audible -- gotten addicted to his writing style and story lines and really enjoy them! That said, I'd suggest
steering a WIDE BERTH around this particular recording! Literally ALL of the "s" sounds come out hissing! I'm not a recording guru, but there MUST be a way to clean up the hissing sounds on a recording that must be years -- if not decades! - old.

( Especially if one acquired them at a discount to SELL at a remarkable discount!)

My device (and current legal requirements being what they are) doesn't allow me OR encourage me to FIND someone to copy and edit out distractions or I'd have happily done so. I have to assume Audible *would* have that right (and the capability to correct it,) once they review the original but just never got around to it OR thought it might be necessary. (MOST DEFINITELY NECESSARY|) I *highly* recommend Jack London's books, but steer clear of THIS particular one until it's worked over!

Great listen

This was a very good listen. I recommend it. I've always liked Hemingway, and wasn't disappointed.
