Publisher's Summary

The Sea Watch is the sixth book in the critically acclaimed epic fantasy series Shadows of the Apt by Adrian Tchaikovsky, winner of the Arthur C. Clarke Award.

Danger lurks beneath dark waters....

A shadow is falling over Collegium. Despite the tenuous peace, Stenwold Maker knows that the Empire will return for his city. Even as he tries to prepare for the resurgence of the black-and-gold army, a hidden threat is working against his people. Ships that sail from Collegium's harbour are being attacked, sunk by pirates. Some just go missing....

Lulled by the spread of lies and false promises, Stenwold's allies are falling away. He faces betrayal on every side, and the Empire is just waiting for the first sign of weakness to strike. But they are not the only power that has its eyes on Collegium. And even with all their military strength and technology, they may not be powerful enough to stave off the forces massing in the darkness.

The Sea Watch is followed by the seventh book in the Shadows of the Apt series, Heirs of the Blade.

Love the series, but this one gets only a like

Great ideas in this book. But it has problems. It's almost as if you can tell it was rushed. There are parts where incidents fall by the wayside and are forgotten, and these incidents are NOT small. It distracts from the story to say "But, what about...?"

Other than that, I liked the new concepts. I just wished Tchaikovsky would've given it the attention he's given the previous entries. The content is there and could've been as good as any of the others.

Steampunk meets Seascape

Continuing in the tradition of Tchaikovsky's elaborate plot weavings, this story brings a new dimension to the struggles of Collegium. I was thrilled by how much the story follows Stenwald and by all the development his character sees in this particular story.
This is yet another artful rambling rollercoaster of an epic fantasy and I cant wait to read the next one!

Started off slow, picked up speed

maybe I've listened to too much of this series recently, but things are starting to feel a bit formulaic and predictable. I still enjoyed the world he built and the expansion, but some of the characters and plot felt a bit hollow.

So many new characters!

A good time but you have to play close attention to the million new terms, places, and names that are introduced.

Another Fabulous Performance.

Ben Allen does another fabulous job narrating; to my ears the ideal way to experience the Shadows of the Apt for the first time.

The story is exciting, dramatic, suspenseful. We get in-depth character development for some interesting characters that we've been held at a distance from so far.

Definitely a standout in the series.

Going into the sea

Most of the still living regulars are gone from this book. Stengwold ends up spending too much time under the sea with new kinden (octopuses and crabs).

Swashbuckling, political intrigue and death

Just about right. The book starts off slow in political intrigue and new facts, which if you've read up until now is a fair bit to take in. We then get battles, treacherous deeds and it all feels "pirates of the carribean" for a while. It wains a bit three quarters through, then it doesn't dissappoint with a thrilling end. I do wonder if Adrian is writing these books For a Netflix deal though. Still, the insight into collegeum politics was welcome, and the additions, well he's obviously not shy of a challenge is Mr Allen.

Apt and on point

Continuing the series, Adrian Tchaikovsky has maintained a startling good epic with equally good developments and branches.

This is such a good story.

That left hook!

Another fantastically read performance by Ben Allen. His ability to hold the continuity of the characters across such a varied story is nothing but amazing.

This book in the shadows of the apt is quite the turn for the story. I love the introduction of the new kin and I felt a touch of nostalgia for the Children of Time and Children of Ruin when the story was in full flight.

Very interested to see how the story progresses with the next chapter delving into the spiders.
