Publisher's summary

Change occurs everywhere, even in the small fictional community of Thrush Green in the British Cotswolds. Dorothy Watson and Agnes Fogerty have taught at the school for as long as anyone can remember, but now they're thinking and talking about retirement. It won't be an easy adjustment for them, or the village residents. Whom can they find that can possibly fill the women's shoes?

Meanwhile, the town wonders if the Lovelock sisters will keep their domestic help. And is that young man really an architectural student, as Agnes thinks? Will Dorothy and Agnes ever find a suitable retirement home, and if the school is sold, what will happen to it?

A thoroughly engaging, warmhearted, small-town tale, certain to appeal to the millions of fans of Jan Karon's bestselling Mitford series.

Great narrator gentle story

Gentle story beautifully narrated by renowned English actress, who brings to life the emotions and interactions of individuals in a small English village in the 1960s, focusing on two school teachers who are preparing to retire.
Although this book is the end of a long series, the characters and storyline can be enjoyed without having read any of the other books (although the earlier books are more interesting and lively, and take place in earlier decades).
Audible, PLEASE make available other books written by this author (who was a school teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in the English countryside), especially the earlier books in both her series (Fairacre and Thrush Green).

Finally! More Miss Read books from Audible

Another lovely Miss Read book, this one about the delightful schoolmistresses. You cannot go wrong with Miss Read's tales of the Cotswold village, Thrush Green. These books always put me in a good mood, and Gwen Watford's narration is pitch-perfect as always. A great use of a credit. You won't regret this one. I often start Miss Read's books over just after finishing, and this one was no exception. Starts out strong and continues from strength to strength.

Superb heartwarming story

The Miss Read novels are not for everyone, but if you’re “ in the cub” who enjoys them you can’t get enough of them! They are gentle, humorous, heartwarming, insightful tales of village life. All is not rosy and airbrushed, and the author has a sharp insight into human nature in all its varieties, but they definitely are books you read to feel calmed, encouraged and reassured. I particularly love this narrator’s voice, Gwen Watford; her voice perfectly meshes with the text in my opinion!
