Publisher's summary

"This is what the truth is. Second Salvations murdered my parents, and I'm running away."

A single post over unregulated Internet channels. A sleeping society awakens to a chase, broadcast live on television screens all across the New United States of America....

Rebecca and Daniel have never met. A 15-year-old preacher's kid and a 16-year-old atheist outcast, they appear to have little in common. And yet they both have attracted the attention of a recruiter for Angel Island, where bad kids go to be remade-or destroyed.

Agents of the all-powerful New America Unity Church will stop at nothing to get them. They're building an army, a modern children's crusade, in which Rebecca and Daniel may be just the kind of future leaders they need.

If not, they might be just the kind of sacrifice necessary to keep the rest of the faithless in line.

Interesting Theocratic Dystopian Future Tale

The Salvation State by Marcus Damanda is a very interesting first installment in what I am guessing could become a series. The idea of a Theocratic American Government is not a new one, Robert Heinlein first used this with his short story "If This Goes On...".

Mr. Damanda has crafted some interesting and compelling characters and gets the listener to invest in their well being, lives, and rapidly draws us into this world. The modern anti-religious sentiment in America makes these characters at times a bit over the top but the story was interesting and an fun. I would recommend the audiobook.

The narration by Jessica McEvoy was very good this is the first time I have heard a performance from her and would definitely enjoy listening to her audio work again.

Amazing book and performance!

Oh Wow! I’m not that big on stories with a religious twist (honestly - it makes me want to roll my eyes a bit) but it didn’t take long before I fell in love with the story and the characters and then it didn’t matter to me anymore. The Salvation State is definitely a pageturner (or what ever the name is for it when you listen to it as an audiobook) and I highly recommend it to everyone. Btw Jessica McEvoy does an amazing job reading the audiobook. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen!

Chilling and thought-provoking

Wonderful character development. It made me really think. What would I do? Preserve myself by following the crowd, or risk everything by standing up for what’s right? Well written and captivating.
Jessica McEvoy’s narration offers a fantastic enhancement to a great story.

Fast Paced, Gripping Thriller

I love a story about out of control cults. They're just so fun! 'The Salvation State' seems to take place in a future where being religious is a requirement for living - having a job, being respected, remaining safe and free. In this future, when one rebells they may find themselves indefinitely imprisoned in a mental institution... or dead. Two young people from opposite sides of this faith fence, end up en route to the same isolated island where the religious nuts are building a terrifying youth army. This story was absolutely enthralling for me from top to bottom; I had a very hard time putting it down. That said, this book has no ending. It just ends. So unless there is a sequel coming out be prepared to love the book and be disappointed in the last second. Normally, this would mean I couldn't recommend this book. But the story itself is so good I can forgive the no-ending enough to recommend it. Jessica McEvoy gives a fantastic narrative performance!

A great time

Jessica narrates this first book of an epic three-part story wonderfully and on point by the excellent author, Marcus Damanda. The story itself is filled with action and adventure, happy moments and sad moments. it's genuinely a good time about a very scary time if you'd like to hear an epic tale! I had a lot of fun listening to it and can't wait to dig into book 2.

Wow !!!

This book is written very well and so off my genre that I can't not be surprised why I couldn't put it down.
Performance is perfectly done.
I believe that the reason that I liked the book so much is because it's so believable, like it could happened or even might be happening right now under our nose.
Really amazing writing, can't wait for book 2 to come out.
Fully recommend !!!

Don’t miss this story

I purposefully didn’t burn right through this in order to fully soak in the story. I wasn’t disappointed! Mr. Damanda has always hooked me with his characters since discovering his work via the No Sleep Podcast, more of the same here. Fully fleshed out.. makes you feel them if that makes sense? Fantastic story. As for the narration? Google Jessica McEvoy. She’s one the best and does an awesome job here.

Very original and difficult to put down!

Dystopian YA fiction isn’t usually my genre, but I’m a long-time fan of Marcus Damanda and the narrator, Jessica McEvoy, so of course I jumped on getting the audio version of this book! (I have a Kindle copy already, but I love Jessica too much to pass up one of her recordings.)

Damanda writes his characters with a depth often missing in this genre. It only takes a few pages before you find yourself invested in both Rachel and Daniel’s stories. This particular book is a great setup for what could be a continuing series on a world where religious corruption runs rampant.

Definitely give The Salvation State a listen.
