Publisher's summary

The audiobook describes in vivid detail Puharich's extraordinary association with Harry Stone, a young sculptor of unusually acute extrasensory perception, who on a number of occasions spontaneously went into a deep trance state and then began to speak and write in the ancient Egyptian language. Identifying himself as Ra Ho Tep, a high-born Egyptian who lived 4,600 years ago, he defined the long lost ritual of the sacred mushroom and its astonishing effects upon the human consciousness.

But the story does not end with the Ra Ho Tep revelations, for during this period Dr. Puharich and his colleagues were actually guided to the discovery of a splendid specimen of the extremely rare Amanita Muscaria, growing in the Maine woods - less than a mile from their laboratory.

In addition to recording these eerie personal experiences, Dr. Puharich has written a brilliant summary of the role of the sacred mushroom in history, myth, and religious experience.

Andrija Puharich is a neurologist. After completing his studies at the medical school of Northwestern University, he set up his own laboratory in Maine for the study of extrasensory perception (ESP). A stint with the US Army at its chemical center aroused his interest in hallucination-producing mushrooms.

Great book but the narration…

The book is written by a man but this is narrated by a woman for some reason. The reader would have been better suited for a different style of book… I’m having a tough time getting through it because its not a pleasure to listen to.

Interesting book, but....

I’m not gonna be a hater. I will say that the reader for this book is a very good reader... for children’s books. That is not a criticism, it’s just that her style is very dramatic and melodious. It seems she is more suited for people who are learning to read and for those who need to be entertained. Sadly, the style of reading used often gets in the way of the information... kind of like how the moon gets in the way of the sun during an eclipse. It’s very hard to listen to and still take seriously. I listened to 3hrs, but just can’t do anymore. I feel like the reader needs to be more aware of her style, and that Audible is doing the writer/publisher a great disservice. A note to the reader... don’t give up! Keep reading, but be more aware of your style and how it works with certain subject matter. I will listen to the book when a more serious sounding reader is appointed.

Narration absolutely killed it for me

The cheesy and overly dramatic narration style was so bad I didn’t make it past chapter one. Was excited to listen to this book and actually tried several times, but couldn’t get past the exaggerated and oddly robot-like speaking style. Would rather throw away the money I spent on this book than suffer through hours of listening to her.

0000000000000000000000

Horrible narration. 28 minutes was all I could bare. I was really excited for the book.

Narrator makes this unlistenable

Got less than 10 mins in. The narrator is unbearable.
Giving the story 5 stars because I’m sure it’s good.

Amazing story, intolerable narrator.

This story is absolutely profound and worthy of study- but don't bother with this recording. if you remember the woman from the Mike Judge film "Office Space" who was answering the phone, this is what you will be dealing with for nearly ten hours and let me tell you, she gets very high pitched. Speeding up or slowing down the recording only helps slightly. it's really that bad. just read it.
